Animation Art & Cels

The world of original animation pieces is much broader than many think.

There are various pieces produced during the animation process and all of them are relatively rare.  In addition, the relative scarcity for original items has created a market for limited edition pieces as well.

Here's a brief (very) synopsis of the some of the types of art work, both unique and produced as collectible, available:

1.  Original animation Production Cels - These pieces are the actual pieces used during the photographic process used during the making of short and full length animation.  Each cel is unique though there are a number of cels used during the photographic process to show movement so there are a number available with only slight variations between them.

2.  Original animation drawings - Prior to the production and painting of original cels, the animators produce drawings of the action.  These pieces utilize different color pencils so that reproduction will not show all of the animators markings.  Usually a Blue pencil will be used and those markings will not show up when reproduced for the final artists.

3.  Original model sheets - Similar to animation drawings but these pieces are usually based on one character and often show different poses, notes, head shots and the like for artists to refer to when making further drawings and animations.

4.  Limited edition Cels, Sericels - Though the process behind these varies, they are both produced as Collectibles rather than being used in an actual production.  Often times they are limited editions and/or signed by original artists or creators.
