Title: Toys & Prices (Toy Shop) [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

I'm in a panic. I always review older edition reviews just to make sure that I don't beat to death highlights and negatives of previous editions and much to my chagrin I note that somehow the 13th edition of this guide fell through the cracks! I use this guide all the time and pride myself on having an unbroken collection since the first edition. What am I going to do! This guide is one of those running guides that even the oldest editions are a valuable reference source.

Enough about me and my personal afflictions.

As you may be able to tell, I'm a fan of this guide from way back and still get a little light headed when a new edition arrives. I read it from cover to cover like some people read a romance novel. With over 30,000 toy listings and my short attention span it takes quite a while to get through it but I love every minute.

This guide has it's focus mainly on the Baby Boomer era of toys and your sure to find something you remember. It's coverage goes further to stay current with toys that are being produced now. Often speculative in nature in terms of value such as that new hot action figure, this guide will help to hone your skill at speculating for future value. These items often times have a brief high value period or drop like a rock so it can be tricky.

Smaller print allows for the huge number of listings and easy to read side page chapter and top of the page headers make it easy to navigate. Items are listed with basic information and values for examples in excellent, near mint and mint condition. Lots of pictures too including a fun to leaf through glossy color center section highlighting toys from all of the covered categories.

I urge you to read previous edition reviews to get the whole picture if my ravings aren't enough for you. The relatively brief synopsis of this guide has nothing to do with it's wealth of information and high value for the price.

Bottom line - If there is a King of the Hill competition for my then this guide is a strong contender.

One of the best buys for the money and a long time member of my must have guide list for every level of general collector and my collectibles dealer must have list.

Title: Tins, Modern Collectible Identification and Values [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

Speculation is often the key to longevity in the Collectibles business and it can be a tricky business indeed. Historically advertising tins have increased in value, often significantly.

Almost all of the tins featured in this guide are still very much speculative in terms of future value. The last ten years or so have shown a boom in the production of tins both as containers for products as well as for collectibles in and of themselves. Some of these tins, lunch boxes for a good example, have already increased significantly in value.

Despite the significant increase in value of some of these, in this example, lunch boxes, others in the same line haven't increased in value or have all but lost even their purchase value in the resale market. Using this guide the user can track some slightly later examples and their present day "value" to help guide their future purchases whether it be for future investment or as a collectible in and of itself.

Price ranges are often a little too broad for my taste. Even though they are noted as such to cover the wide venues where these newer items can be found from the lowliest of yard sales to online shops and auctions, I would have liked to see a further breakdown to help the novice collector. By their very nature the values even at the various venues are less than set in stone so this issue isn't as significant as it might be when covering older collectibles.

Bottom line - a very affordable market with potential gains and little investment along with great display value make this guide a good overview for a number of different collectors including advertising, character and lunch box, not to mention tins themselves.

Title: Records, American 1950 - 1975, Goldmine Standard Catalog of [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

As promised, here is Goldmine's big one, and I mean BIG! Literally the size of an old school phone book, this guide focuses on the most popular period of American records spanning from 1950 to 1975.

Well over 150,000 albums are covered including important variations, labels and picture sleeves. The format is unchanged from the normal tried and true Goldmine format and includes descriptive text noting and variations, etc. along with a value for a near mint copy.

Additionally the guide provides brief sections for the hard to track down categories; original cast albums, soundtracks, various artist records and television albums. Finding anything on these categories is really difficult and any guides available are long since out of print.

Bottom line - if you collect or deal in records you simply can't afford not to have this in your library. The value for the meager $35 investment is hard to beat.

Title: Garage Sale & Flea Market Annual [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

Sometimes change IS NOT a good thing. Such is the case with this guide that continues to challenge all comers with it's coverage of the popular Collectibles markets.

Focused a good deal on the entry buying level (garage sales, Flea markets, Ebay) market, this guide is a real world usable guide when buying for yourself or, more importantly, buying for resale at similar venues. The introductory information provides some real details on the editors look at what they believe to be hot in today's Collectibles market. This along with some other ground level advice will prepare you well to your entry into the great world of Collectibles.

Retail dealers shouldn't overlook the usefulness of this guide despite some values not being applicable to their venue. Knowing what people are buying is the most important piece of information a dealer can have. At a minimum the price comparison between various items within a category will serve as a benchmark regardless of how the "value" was derived an an experienced dealer can put that information to good use.

Bottom line - Yet another year on my collectibles dealer must have list. Need I say more?

Title: Money, Money, Money! Introduction to KP Book's latest Money (Collectible) Guides [picture of collectibles price guide]

I can barely keep the spending kind of money let alone save the valuable stuff but apparently a lot more people can manager their funds better than I can.

The subtleties of this collecting field are more extreme than in any other area and guides become necessary if you really want to play with the big boys (and girls!).

Krause offers what is likely the largest selection of guides on money of all kinds so make sure you stop by to see them all.

Talk about complicated, now you have to measure the money in addition to looking for minute differences! Some of these are well know issues (classes) such as Silver and Gold certificates but some of the others you might easily slip to the checker at the supermarket.

The guide is broken down by denomination and then further by class. A Picture of the bill is followed by detailed information that includes the mint location, serial number range of production, number of notes printed along with a value range from very fine to uncirculated.

Bottom line - who would ever have thought that having "less" money could actually buy more! With such a specialized category, this guide will come in handy.

Title: Coins & Prices A Guide to U.S., Canadian and Mexican Coins [picture of collectibles price guide]

It's a big world and to make coin collecting manageable, many collectors specialize in specific world coins. This guide covers U.S., Canadian and Mexican coins and covers over 45,000 coins.

3,000 pictures of the various coins are accompanied by dating and other pertinent information along with a wider than normal range of condition values for easier determination of actual coins.

This guide goes well beyond being a price guide and has 13 chapters prior to the price guide that delve completely into the world of coin collecting. Coverage includes the manufacturing process, coverage of the venues to find your coins at, care and protection of your collection and a hot list for 2007.

Bottom line - vast coverage along with over 100 pages of collector information make this guide a valuable reference for both new and experienced collectors.

Title: Coins, Strike it Rich with Pocket Change, Error Coins Bring Big Money [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

With coin collecting a good eye can make all the difference and this is particularly true with "error" coins. Though the differences can often times be striking (excuse the pun!), it is more likely that the mistake is only noticeable if you know what to look for.

Unlike the normal coin collecting format, this guide goes much further into detail with the various mistake/error coins. The guide breaks down by coin value and then by date but that's where the similarity to other guides stops.

Once you get to the individual variations you'll find a straight forward guide of not only what to look for but extra clues and places to look to verify the real mccoy. Full coin picture along with close-up shots of the variation are included along with three condition values.

Bottom line - unless your already an expert or one of the authors, your going to need this guide. The mistakes on some of these coins literally can be the size of a small scratch. Many of these coin errors are not that old and can be quite valuable so it's also a great hobby to start your kids on with everyday coins.

A staple on the shelves of most serious collectors and dealers alike, this guide covers Nationally issued from 1863 to 1935. Title: Coins and Paper Money Identification and Price Guide [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

So far the other price guides I've reviewed during this latest round of money guides from Krause have been focused to smaller breakdowns within the field such as the area of the world in which they were issued. If your just starting out, however, you may not know what, or if, you want to focus on.

This guide provides a hefty overview of the field of money collecting in general. It covers many of the areas covered in more focused guides but provides an overview rather than a complete examination of each category/type of money. You'll find most standard delineations within the market covered; U.S. coins and paper money, Canadian coins, Ancient coins, Medieval and Renaissance coins, European coins and more.

The introductory information is a little more robust than most to cater to newer collectors and dealers providing a good basic background. Most coins are pictured for easier identification and are followed by other identifying details and a range of values.

Bottom line - best suited for the new collector or dealers, this guide will help to focus your interests in the field of collecting money whether it be coin, paper or both.

This guide covers some 18,000 bills from all over the world with over 10,000 pictures along with values listed for three different condition grades. Specialized issues are notes that were issued by individual states, municipalities and even private companies.

This guide is put together with the cooperation of over 50 recognized experts in the field and I've got to believe the assertion that this guide is the most comprehensive on the field. If you really need the WHOLE story you can also pick up the similar phone book sized guide that features the general issues (see next review).

Title: Fire-King & More, Anchor Hocking's Identification & Value Guide [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

Although many might yell at me for my everyday kitchen pieces including mostly Fire-King Charm, Restaurant ware, Jane Ray and Jadite, I'm a firm believer in putting Collectibles back to use. My Fire-King / Anchor Hocking everyday pieces have lasted for years and still look great despite heavy usage.

The offerings of Anchor Hocking will probably surprise most people. Although they are most well known for there Fire-King pieces, Anchor Hocking continues (100 years and counting!) to produce to this day and their offerings include a vast array of patterns, colors and advertising/character pieces.

Broken down first by type of use (e.g. dinnerware, ovenware), each section is further broken down by pattern or type of item. Most sections have a robust introduction that goes into great detail and history.

Once narrowed down, the guide provides numerous full color photographs along with an easy to follow price chart by piece that lists brief name and dimensions along with retail reference values.

Bottom line - with the exception of some Fire-King pieces which are really hot right now, Anchor Hocking glassware is fairly easy to find and still one of those categories that you have a decent chance of locating at yard sales, thrift stores or flea markets before they reach the retail price level. Many people are often surprised at the pieces included in this companies lines and they work as well now as they did over these last 100 years. These pieces present an opportunity not only for cool everyday usage but also for potential profits but, like always, you have to know what to look for. This guide will fit the bill.

Title: Auction Field Guide Volume 1, Raycrafts' [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

The Raycraft boys have done it again with their comfortable presentation in this guide and on the bonus DVD that's included with it.

I suggest you watch the DVD first to put you in the mood that the Raycraft's have created both pieces in. Laid back and low key the interviews with local show dealers as they highlight their knowledge about a dozen or so categories makes you feel like your just shooting the breeze at the local flea market or show. Don't look for high production values here folks, just a couple of bro's wandering the floor looking for that display that just screams "here's what I know".

Now that you've gotten your fill of down home goodness you'll be ready to take a look at the guide which has taken similar focus on the limited number of Collectible categories it features. Each of these categories is nicely done with larger than normal full color close-up photos, descriptive text and sizing along with what one would assume, based on the title, are auction results despite them not noting that specifically.

The front guide along with introductory materials for each section provide information that will teach you about how the auction system works and how to get in on it.

I can only be led to believe that the inclusion in this and their Americana guide of noting volume 1 means that more volumes and more categories are to follow. As their coverage of individual categories, in terms of items shown and valued, comes close to and at times surpasses other guides dedicated to those categories it's a good guide to collect as a general "encyclopedia" set. These types of guide is great for referring to even years after it is published for that illusive value.

Coverage includes; Country Store (tins and containers mostly), Football, John Deere, Petroliana (lots of nice signs in here), Soda Pop. Tobacciana and Toy Cars & Trucks. The DVD adds another 8 categories but I gotta leave something to the imagination!

Bottom line - I like the Raycraft's unassuming coverage of the markets and their often less than polished , though admittedly newly created!, DVD personalities that they meet along the way. I jest, it's actually what I love about the discs they throw in. If your into general Collectibles buying or collecting with little reserve (as I am!) as to what you buy, then you'll probably want this guide. If you don't put it to use right away, you will likely be glad for the reference sometime in the near future.

Title: Fishing Lures Field Guide Values and Identification, Warman's [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

Just like when your fishing, being prepared and in the right place is the key to landing the big one in the Collectibles world too. Good preparation means either having and encyclopedic memory or having important information at your fingertips.

Of course if your only into collecting one type of item its fairly easy to put your favorite guide under your arm but who has the kind of control it takes to keep to collecting just one thing!?

Warman continues to scratch that itch with its Field Guide series which are, more often than not, mini companion guides to their larger versions. Such is the case with this guide which does a nice job of providing a wealth of information in a tiny, easy to carry, package.

This edition sees the addition of full color pictures of over 500 examples to make in the field identification even easier. This change from the 1st edition is to keep in step with all of the other field guides that are now done in full color.

The text doesn't just cram the basic identification details and values but goes just as far as most other larger lure guides in detailing the history of the companies included and other important details to narrow values and make identification of rarities a snap.

Bottom line - it should come as no surprise to regular readers of my reviews that I recommend this guide to collectors and dealers of all levels since I haven't reviewed one of Warman's field guides that I haven't found to be a valuable edition. This is particularly true for buyers who search out even the most unlikely places to find vintage lures like yard sales where you need to be fast on your feet and travel light.

Title: Dolls Field Guide Values and Identification, Warman's [picture of collectibles price guide]

Many a collectors passion is fueled by the memory of their first toy and more often than not that toy was a doll. Of course, fuel has a way of, well.., fueling that passion and soon it's not their doll they want back but everyone else's too!

It's easy to recall your doll but knowing everyone else's is a little bit tricky, you'll need help. There are dozens of manufacturers along with various materials used and both of these factors often determine a collector's interest in dolls.

Organized by materials used then by manufacture/artist it makes finding a doll easy for the novice who may not know the manufacture or artist but can certainly see the composition of the doll. Almost every page of this guide features a full color picture of a doll or group of dolls along lengthily details and a short range of values to account for the all important condition of this category of collecting.

Bottom line - This is a great guide for everyone but particularly for the starting collector. This guide will wet the appetite without breaking the bank. It provides a healthy overview of most of the big names in dolls without having to shell out for the many guides available on the subject. The compact size make it the most practical guide for learning will browsing out in the collecting markets.

Title: Tools Field Guide Values and Identification, Warman's [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

I can't drive a nail properly to save my life but it was my Grandfather who sparked an interest in tools in me. His immaculately kept basement workshop was chock full of tools of all types and his skill with all of them hasn't been matched by anyone I've met to date.

Collectors see just as much beauty and craftsmanship in the tools they collect as in the items that these tools create. Tools to them become more a work of art or a piece of sculpture to be displayed and admired as such. With 250 color pictures, this guide is likely to ignite the same spark in even those not even remotely interested now.

Organized by the tools type (e.g. planes, drills, etc.) the guide goes into details that go well beyond the size and manufacture and will be more than enough for any collector to have the information necessary to negotiate tool purchases.

Bottom line - Comparisons to the value of similar looking tools is often times not appropriate and can mean large differences in not only what you pay but the overall long term value as well. With 2,000 listed tools of all types, this guide will make a nice addition to your library or glove compartment and will provide a discerning reference.

Title: Pepsi Field Guide Values and Identification, Warman's [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

Quickly gaining on it's big brother, Coca-Cola, the Pepsi collectibles market is heating up slowly but surely. As Coca-Cola items continue to increase in value, and cost, it is only a matter of time before Pepsi collectibles follow suit. Buying now while values are relatively cheap is the key to making money for dealer and collector alike.

There are many collectibles within the Pepsi category and this guide does a nice job of highlighting the majority, if not all, of them. Filled to the brim with color photographs, identification will be a snap and along with any important details and retail value you find a use in any venue.

Bottom line - With almost all of the space in this guide taken up with color pictures (over 750 of them!) and values the bang for the buck cannot be argued. Seemingly like items can sell for three times what the other item does and there is little to indicate the difference without something to guide you. In the field you need to make the buying decision quickly or risk the guy behind you picking it up. You'll have the jump on them with this guide in you pocket (literally!).

Though they are always included in guides on toy vehicles and trucks, farm toys are one of the categories under this broader category that can easily stand alone. Because of its sheer scope, it is a category that requires a dedicated guide to truly get a view of the market.

Large color photographs fill most pages and all basic sizing and dating information are provided along with values. As always, the size of this guide lends itself to easy transportation anywhere you do your buying.

Bottom line - This guide is certainly a necessity if your into collecting Farm toys. Vehicle collectors, too, should find it a useful reference.
