| Title: Halloween, Vintage Collectibles | Click for larger picture |
There are a few Collectible categories that are so visually appealing that they transcends the world of collectibles and become decorator pieces and even Folk art at times. Christmas is one, Halloween is the other.
Who isn't stopped in their tracks by the great designs and folksy look of early Halloween decorations, figures and Trick or Treat related items. Though maybe not for the faint of heart, this book is a beautiful retrospective on this spooky Holiday and the collectible items that have amassed around it.
Childhood memories will spring forth for all generations as you leaf through this large volume that contains far more than the Skeleton or Witch you used to hang on the door. Categories include; games, Lanterns and lamp shades, candy containers, nodders and figures. In fact, there are so many items that there is a full 20 page section devoted to items that just don't fall into the categories above. Every item includes a crisp color picture along with the manufacture date and manufacturer when known along with dimensions. In addition to the pricing information the author provides his own scarcity index to help provide as much information as you can have to determine "value".
Bottom line - this category is one of those that catches many people off guard. I've been to many homes that were weeding out items for sale only to find some of the items illustrated in this guide in a box destined for the trash. Values can be significant and often people don't realize that these specialized guides are out there to use.
Additionally, this guide is a likely candidate for a single edition that may not be redone in the future. Because of this potential, you should snatch it up while you can if you collect Halloween related items, Holiday collectibles or deal in folk art pieces. This is another one of those guides that's just great fun to look at and really provides some great history on Halloween tradition.

Title: Depression Glass, Collector's Encyclopedia of ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
If you collect Depression glass and even if you've just been to a good show with glass dealers you know there are a lot of patterns and colors to collect. Many collectors and dealers specialize in certain patterns and/or colors for just this reason.
Putting all of the varieties of Depression glass into a book, or even books, that's both easy to use and nicely organized is no easy task but this guide does a great job. Maybe it's the grouped piece pictures or the short and to the point section on the various patterns but this is actually one of the first Depression glass books that I've even wanted to take a second look at.
The author manages to almost fool you with this book and crams over 150 different patterns of Depression glass into this book and that doesn't include the reproduction pages. Though I mention that the sections are brief they are not too brief and include an introduction to each pattern that often includes the history of the line, personal observations from the author/collector and hints on hard to find pieces and trends. The introduction is followed by a grouped picture of know pieces in the pattern that is shot in such a way as to clearly show the details of the patterns that are often missing in other guides. Finally there is a chart for retail mint condition pieces by description and color, if applicable.
Where there is a continuing and growing market and money to be made there will be reproductions and depression glass is probably one of the most prolific markets for these reproductions. Reproductions have there place when they are clearly identified and sold as such but even with the best intentions they may make it into the after market and lose this identity. Combine this with a few unscrupulous dealers and you can imagine how many people unknowingly get burned. If your a dealer then you probably have access to catalogs selling these reproductions but if your not you may be completely unaware. The back section of this book spans some 15 pages and includes significant details to identify the real thing from the fake along with comparison pictures for known reproductions in the market. Actual experience is always your best bet but armed with this information the beginning collector has a much better chance of wisely investing rather than throwing their money away.
Bottom line - it's really hard to argue with a guide that has made it through 16 editions without slowing down. In fact, this guide continues to grow and includes 40 additional pieces that were previously not known to exist along with a few similar color variations.
This guide takes the unmanageable and makes it manageable, and useful!

Title: Book Collector's Price Guide, Antique Trader ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Just because it's old doesn't mean it's valuable. Probably no other category of collecting illustrates this better than books. Again another of my admitted weak links and I'm certain I have passed up a gem or two among all those piles and shelves of books at sales and even thrift stores.
It would be impossible to include every first edition and/or valuable book in a portable, single volume, guide. Having said that, this guide does a great job of letting you dip your toes in the vast waters of book collecting. By carefully choosing the books listed, the author has provided enough of an overview that you can at least get the feel for the value in these books and probably make much more educated guesses when thumbing through that could be bonanza on the shelf.
The high point for me with this guide is not the book listings themselves but the insight that the author provides into the world of book collecting. Nearly the first 100 pages of this guide are devoted to familiarizing you with the proper identification of first editions, terminology used in the book world, grading, advice for collectors and much more.
Identifying the valuable "first edition" is trickier than you think and quite a number of pages are devoted to illustrating various methods for proper identification of a true first edition. There is no universal method for marking first editions to this day so the guide not only outlines the 6 most utilized methods but then follows this with a list of publishers sorted by methodology including a few maverick publishers who march to their own unique drummer (he also clues you in to there markings). Finally this section breaks down the "printer codes" you see in the front of the books. Up until now they may have just been strings of numbers and/or letters to you but once your clued in to what they really mean it's like a slap in the face.
The glossary is followed by a huge section that lists the various author's pseudonyms which not only help you collect all of the works by your favorite author who you might not other recognize on the dust jacket but also provides another opportunity to pick up some really valuable bargains simply because you know the book is really written by a well known author and not some John Doe.
The last little, but valuable, surprise to this book is the section devoted to the signatures of some of the more sought after authors. It's easy enough for a dishonest seller to scrawl a signature on the leaf of a first edition and call it authentic. Armed with legitimate examples of previous signatures you can tell the crooks where to go.
Oh, by the way, there is also a book price guide! 12 different categories of books (e.g. Americana, Mystery, Poetry, etc.) are listed and provide a nice top level overview. Both high end and lower end values are illustrated giving you a realistic look at values overall.
Each section starts off with a listing of the top ten Holy Grails within the categories and some of the prices will knock you for a loop. Some of these top ten rarities aren't really that old so it is well worth the study. Books are listed by author and show two brief ranges of value for the two average condition ranges. Familiarizing yourself with the author's pricing methodology/ideology will enable you to come up with a value for these books in every condition.
Bottom line - Book collectors and dealers are generally a breed set apart. They're focused and know their stuff when it comes to their area of collecting. Much of their knowledge comes from market experience and networking among fellow collectors and dealers. For them the front section of this book might be the most useful.
The bigger draw for this guide is among the generalized collector and dealer who is always on the look out for all things collectible and valuable. The key to being an efficient generalized buyer is to have at least top level knowledge of the vast majority of categories of Antiques and Collectibles on the market today. For them this guide is a valuable one that when thrown into the glove compartment or buying "kit" will likely come in handy.

Title: Coca-Cola (Coke), BJ Summers guide to ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Quick word association, "Soda".... Ninety percent of you would probably say "Coke" or "Coca-Cola" and with good reason. Along with our love for the soda itself has come a brand identification that is second to none. Coke is tied right into the weave of Pop culture and America itself.
With the strong identification with a brand name, logo or both, as in this case, comes merchandising and collecting. Coca-Cola is so successful with its product and brand logo that their advertising and brand items are generally separated from other advertising or soda items simply due to the sheer volume of items available.
Fitting everything into one volume is impossible and providing a good overview is difficult. This guide tackles the job successfully and provides over 40 different categories of Collectibles. Some are obvious (e.g. Bottles, dispensers, coolers) while others might surprise you (e.g. Clothing, games).
You can really take a trip down memory lane by just leafing through this guide which is chock full of beautiful color pictures depicting graphics from all eras. In addition to the many pictures there are additional text listings of other related items. Prices are noted along with the condition of the value quoted and, interestingly, a price code.
The price codes are used by the author as means of explaining the pricing ideology. The three pricing codes include; a value given to the author by a collector(s), value given by a dealer or an auction result. Realizing that different people and different guides have different slants on determining value I always stress clearly laying out the ideology with as many details as possible. You will always have some working to do with prices to determine your items value whether it be due to the area of the Country your in, the condition of the item or other affecting variables and I like Summer's approach which provides you starting points for many of these variables for every item.
Bottom line - I'm certain that this guide will surprise even experienced Coca-Cola collectors with its scope. Beautifully done and well grounded pricing information will make this guide useful to Coke collectors regardless of their experience in the market.

Title: Dolls, German Porcelain 1836-2002 ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
What do you get when you mix the most prolific porcelain producing Country with arguably one of the best manufactures of Dolls and Toys? Some of the best porcelain dolls your likely to see.
18 porcelain factories are featured and between them there are 300 dolls described. Each section starts with a lengthily discussion on the history of each factory along with pictures of the factory, catalogue pages and advertisements. Introductions are quite lengthily and you'll feel like you've been to the factory itself when your done. A peek inside a contemporary factory (complete with color pictures) lets you in on how these beautiful dolls are actually made.
Knowing who made these dolls and how it was done is certainly nice but the shining feature of these book are the dolls themselves. Throughout each factory section are beautiful color pictures of the dolls they produced. Many of these dolls are in the kind of nice condition your not likely to see very often due to their fragile nature and most dolls have robust detailed descriptions.
Bottom line - Collecting is not just about price guides. To be the kind of collector who knows his/her stuff and has the best chance of scoring the big bargains you have to know your field(s). For this reason, historical overviews such as this are invaluable. This book will not only provide you with the top producers of these dolls but also many full color examples of mint of near mint versions to help grade and price those you find in the field. It is this kind of detailed information that can really come in handy.

Title: Introduction to Warman's "Field Guide" series ![]()
I decided to tackle all of the latest offerings in Warman's pocket sized "Field Guide" series all at once since their usefulness definitely overlaps the varied categories covered by each individual guide.
Ok, so you now have a fantastic research library that fills all of the walls in you home. Impressive yes but what do you do now: Your standing in the middle of an isolated field at five in the morning shining your flashlight at an item you pretty sure is undervalued by the flea market dealer. Your memory just isn't serving up the details you need, just vague recollections that could easily go in either direction!
Enter Warman's! With their recent field guide series you can easily pack a book full on knowledge for quite a few collecting fields in your flea market shoulder bag. Don't like to carry a bag?, wear a pair of cargo pants and you can easily tote along 3 or 4 of these guides and not even notice them.
Each guide measures just about four by five inches with about an inch worth of pages. Don't let the size fool you, that's about 500 pages!
Detail is not lost through the miniaturization process. Each guide not only has an immense amount of pictures but doesn't skimp on item details. Dates, sizing, often lengthily history and tips on identification are just some of the material covered in these deceiving guides.

Talk about a big category, Jewelry is certainly one of these categories. Gold, Silver, Diamonds, Rhinestones, Costume...the list goes one and, obviously, there are vast differences in values among these items.
This guide is significantly more than a price guide and about 175 pages are used to educate the buyer. Information on maker's marks helps to further identify the high valued pieces. Lists after list of clues will help you to narrow down the decade in which the piece was made and authentication tests will help to sort out the paste from the real gems. This front section is particularly apt with this category since it is impossible to give a complete listing of jewelry on the market.
However, combine this education with the many examples in the following 300+ pages, complete with many pictures and very complete descriptions, and you will certainly be better armed for making wise jewelry buys.
Bottom line - It's one thing to wing it when you buying a 60's board game or even toy but when your taking about potentially 1000's of dollars you had better be prepared. Read this guide, read it again then carry it with you.

Title: Fishing Lures, Warman's Field Guide to ![]()
![]()

Read Introduction to Warman's Field Guide seriesfirst
Your at the flea market when you spot a small collection of fishing memorabilia and, since you've just started collecting fishing stuff, you stop to take a look. The dealer has some nice stuff and some not so nice stuff, he appears to know a little about the items but he's no expert. You spot a rather plain lure with a spinning mechanism at it's neck. It's marked "The Manistee" and sits inside a plain white box with "C. Harris" written in pencil by the previous collector. That's as much as the seller knows, he's priced it $35. Should you buy it? Most plain lures you've seen lately top out around this value in the retail market so you pass it by.
Upon arriving home you dive for your lure guides and nearly pass out, the lure has a starting value of $900 in very good condition! How could you know? How could ANYONE know?
The fact is that the top end of lures is VERY top end and some lures easily bring hundreds and even thousands of dollars. Because of the relatively low value of the majority of the market, it is a great place to come across some real bargains.
Bottom line - just as you can't see the merchandise at a pre-dawn flea market without a flashlight, you're not likely to spot the diamonds in the rough among groupings of lures without an incredible grasp of the market or readily accessible guides.
Granted, you may see the exact lures you find in the field but this guide, organized by the major manufactures, provides a very good overview that will certainly help you narrow down the field. The front section is dedicated to the anatomy and terminology of the lures themselves and has some very helpful diagrams for beginners to familiarize themselves with the lingo of the trade.

I don't care how long I've been dealing in toys, I still need a guide for every Barbie I buy. I can usually guess the era of the doll but values are all over the place within an era and I've been stung more than a couple of times buying dolls hoping to make some profit only to find that I paid full retail....or more!
There are number of very complete guides out there but they are huge and not practical even for a collector/dealer who is only looking for Barbies.
This guide does a lot of what the large guides do and provides enough information along with the all important close-up head shots of the dolls (these, along with the other photos are in color too!) to identify not only Barbies but her pals too.
As with other guides in this series there are lots of extras and this one includes sections on the Barbies produced by well known designers, fashions for Barbie and much more. The last 200 pages or so are dedicated to an itemized price guide that will match up to most on the market.
Bottom line - "Number 1", "Number 2", "Bubble cut" "Francie", "Skipper", old, new? What's what and how much should I pay? I've already added this book to my glove compartment and so should you if you ever had difficulties with any of these doll identifications.

I don't think I've been in any household, at any flea market or even in any thrift store that doesn't have a Hot Wheels car(s) in it. Many of these cars are usually only worth the few dollars they cost now.
Spot a red line rimmed tire?, your on to something. Now, is it worth $60 or $600? This is a real range of value for these earlier models. Again this collecting area requires readily available information.
Every car listed features a full color photograph along with a description of the car shown (versus variations that exist for most models) and that particular cars value. The cool "got it, need it" check boxes next to the listings will probably only make you sad when you realize how many of these cars are out there to collect!
Bottom line - full color pictures and examples of many of the vintage "redline" and blackwall" hot wheels along with the 1989-1999 issues provides a useful overview. This guide is simply too small to clue you into every variation within each model (which can have different values) but its intended use as a field guide is a big success.

Title: Fiesta, Collector's Encyclopedia of ![]()

Fiesta is probably one of the most collected kitchen and household pottery lines and certainly one of the most well known. It is so popular in fact that the line was resurrected in 1986 complete with new colors.
This guide saves the prices for last and provides a visually brilliant tour through the Fiesta and other lines complete with a rich history not only of the companies involved but also on individual unique and rare pieces. After 9 editions of a book and years of collecting you have to learn a lot and the authors pass it all along willingly and with great detail.
Color can make a huge difference in terms of value and it's important to understand the differences within individual pieces as well as between the old and new lines. The price guides are listed at the back and include columns for the usually grouped or single color variations that determine the different value structures.
This book is not just about Fiesta, it also covers other great ceramic lines like Harlequin, Riviera, Kitchen Kraft and more. Though these sections are not as detailed, they are not cursory either and give you a nice glimpse at other collectible lines.
Bottom line - there is no better way to brighten up a drab kitchen, or house for that matter, than to add some Fiestaware. Prices for color variations can easily vary by as much as three times so having the detailed knowledge this book lays out is very important. With the detailed price lists all grouped at the back they can easily be copied and put in your bag or purse for on the road reference. The identification of other lines that often carry no markings is a valuable bonus for beginning collectors.

Title: Fashion doll makeovers, Ultimate / Tips from the Experts ![]()

Since Hobby House has gotten on board I have really developed an appreciation and respect for the creativity involved not only with making future Collectibles but also in enhancing current Collectibles.
One of the most prolific subjects on their shelves is that of fashion doll outfit and accessory creation and this title encompasses a little bit of everything when it comes to fashion dolls.
The book includes literally thousands of pointers and instructions from the simplest short cut to the most detailed (usually with full color pictures) instructions. There are just too many items included in this treasure trove for fashion doll enthusiasts to give it justice but here are a few of the subjects included:
Believe me that this is just a sampling of the headings for the chapters which often have a dozen tips on each page.
Bottom line - As I've mentioned, I've developed an appreciation and respect for this type of work but the expertise certainly doesn't come along with it.
Clearly this type of work is best accomplished by the help of others and this type of book is handy for the newbie and expert alike. This is one of the best titles on the subject I've seen from Hobby House to date and it's a fun read that lends itself completely to browsing.

Title: Doll Values Antique to Modern ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
There really aren't that many top level doll price guides out there and it usually comes down to the subtle differences between the guides that makes you choose one over another. Doesn't make your choice bad, just different.
Like other top contenders, this guide provides you with listings for thousands of different dolls accompanied by about 500 color pictures. It's compact design and softcover are a purposeful divergence from Collector Books normal large format, hardcover, volumes due to its value as a carry along book often shoved into your travel bag. There is no quality lost.
Doll identification and pricing is broken into the two categories indicated in the title and this is fairly standard for guides of this type. Listings are detailed and often include significant history and details on individual dolls. This is particularly true for those dolls that are pictured. Size and year of manufacture are always noted as are manufacturers marks.
Pricing in this book is constantly highlighted and reinforced with descriptions of the two price columns for most of the individual categories/manufactures that vary from time to time. Some important variations are included using this reinforcing method such as the inclusion of accessories and original boxes when they exist.
Where this guide might get a leg up over the competitors is with the multiple indexes at the back of the book. One of the most useful utilizes a concept that most of the better books on marks on items uses, a symbol index. This index has simple forms such as "horseshoe", "crossed swords", etc. then identifies the manufacturer(s) that utilize such a mark. It is a brief index but a valuable start in the research process since the symbol is likely to be the most obvious and legible mark. Of course the other indexes are equally valuable and include a letter index for abbreviated signatures, mold number index and the normal name index if you already have your doll identified.
Bottom line - I really don't deal too heavily in dolls so my scrutiny of what layout I prefer with these top level guides probably isn't as sophisticated as most doll collectors out there. The best I can do is to provide the detailed look at these guide and leave the choice up to you. Regardless, choosing this guide as your "go to" general guide simply cannot be a mistake. Listings are easy to navigate and there are always illustrative pictures on every page. Indexes included at the back will definitely prove worthwhile even in conjunction with other guides. Great price too!

Title: Flea Market Price Guide, Warman's ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
It's that time again. Time for the next editions of the general price guides to released. I love this time of year! Nothing is more fun and provides more general information than these top level guides. They can also, but not always, be good indicators of where the market is heading and what categories are hot so it makes for timely information for collectors and sellers alike.
In the case of Warman's latest edition of the Flea Market price guide it focuses on a single venue. Though you might think that is a hindrance, the fact is that Flea Markets are becoming closer and closer to retail shops both in terms of access to them and prices asked. Obviously I haven't looked at each category and each price quoted but with a decent overview on my part the prices do indeed appear to be at or near retail. Looks like the days of bargain hunting are coming to a full end.
None of this pricing information effects the integrity of the guide in any fashion, it's merely food for thought that I pass along for information sake. Possibly it's a wake up call for some of you out there passing up what may actually be very good deals at Flea Markets because you believe the prices to be too high.
Format for this type of guide has very much levelized even between different publishers and is a straight forward, by category, listing. This guide, unlike some, does not dwell too long on any one category but spends the energy instead on covering to different degrees a vast number of categories. This approach is the only one that's acceptable to me with these guides. If you want, for example, a huge "Glass" section you should probably be buying specialized books on the subject(s) rather than a general pricing guide.
There are a decent number of pictures including a small section of color pages but the emphasis is on getting you as much information on as many categories as possible. Don't expect lengthily descriptions for most items in a guide of this nature but the critical information is almost always included including size and markings. Again, this is just as it should be.
Since this guide has been formed around the Flea Market venue, Warman's brings you into that world with the introductory 40 or so pages. First, Warman's educates you from the ground up as to what a Flea Market is, what to bring with you, what you can expect and how to deal with the sellers. If your not already a Flea Market junky, this section will get you excited enough to wake up at the crack of dawn next weekend. This introduction is followed by a brief listing of Flea Markets throughout the country but, as they mention, always check with the locals and in the newspapers to find the most current information. Finally, there is an often humorous section of quotes and comments from buyers and sellers which will give you a peek into the psyche of those involved.
Bottom line - I've noticed significant positive changes in Warman's guides over the last few years both with regards to format as well as to giving more accurate pricing for the often overlooked Collectible (vs. Antique) items that are taking over so much of the market. To be prepared for the real life market you have to have information on what's really selling and/or what people are looking for. This is the best new general guide I've seen so far that really addresses the current trends and values in the market. As I mentioned, it's pricing really reflects closely in many instances to the retail market in general so you don't have to be a Flea Market buyer to benefit from it.

Title: McCoy Pottery Collector's Reference & Value Guide Volume 1 ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
McCoy is arguably the most popular affordable level (as opposed to art pottery, for example) pottery collected these days. Still very much affordable and lots of great display pieces that can be beautiful, whimsical. or both.
Even though this guide generally excludes cookie jars by McCoy, which are a category unto themselves, there are still 45 individual sections of different McCoy lines. McCoy is nothing if not diverse.
Each section is dominated by high quality full color pictures of various examples. Along with the pictures is an easy to read chart that includes year(s) of manufacture and dimensions , marks used and glazes or colors the individual pieces were done in. Selected pieces in these sections have additional details of rarity, variations, etc..
In addition to the front section of McCoy history and illustrated marks through the periods of 1910-1980, the individual sections include a brief history on the lines along with notes on price variations for rare colors and other interesting facts.
Ultimately what you get is a great overall reference book for a huge selection of McCoy that will likely serve most collector's needs and combined with the other volumes I have to believe you would never be wanting for McCoy references.
Bottom line - I can only guess what might be in the other volumes of this guide since most McCoy I've had or seen shows up one way or another in this guide. I'm certain the other guides have value but with this volume on your shelf you will be able to either find your exact piece or enough comparison pieces to accurately evaluate your collection.

Title: Records, Goldmine's record album and 45 RPM record price guides ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
I'm holding what must be 6 pounds of reference material on old vinyl! When the color of the record label, note on back cover or included/excluded song can't mean hundreds of dollars difference, you had better be well informed. When Goldmine, arguably the biggest marketplace magazine for records, and Krause get together you'll be hard pressed to be better armed for that next flea market bin.
As I've mentioned, there are slight, and possibly unnoticeable to most, difference on albums and 45's that can mean the difference between just some cool sounds and a "sound" investment (couldn't resist). The record market is also one of those few markets were condition literally IS everything. If your dealing with real collectors you had better know if that small scratch takes you from mint to very good, and this can happen quickly in the vinyl world.
You might need a magnifying glass, especially if your as old as I am!, because this guide is jam packed and the only way to get the huge volume of pricing information in is to print small. Even with that your not going to find everything in these guides and good record dealers have many guides including special guides, not unlike the 45 RPM guide, to cover all areas of record collecting.
Record Album price guide - with over 65,000 albums included it is highly likely that you'll be able to evaluate most of your collection. This guide is always growing and it's introduction sections seem to get longer and longer. Here you'll not only find out information about how the prices are derived, how to use the guide and grade your records but also an extensive section that details, by label (manufacturer), the variables that are seen in the design of these labels and what they mean in terms of dating the record itself.
The straight forward alphabetical artist listings are broken down by label and variations within individual titles. Though there is a separate guide for promotional records, a number of them are noted within individual artists sections as a further variation within a title. Pricing is show at three levels starting at what many consider the only condition for a true collectible record, "very good".
Color center sections are almost mandatory in price guides these days but Goldmine really puts theirs to use and provides some very useful information along with the great pictures. I wont give it away totally but there is a nice section on identifying rare and counterfeit Beatles records and a 2 page section on the variations of the genesis of the Columbia record label. Lots more too, it's nicely done.
45 RPM records price guide - Some record guides include a section within the artist breakdown to include 45 records but it really can't do justice to the huge amount of 45s available on the market. 45's were some of the most popular sellers well into the 1970's as it provided a way for you to buy just the songs you really wanted and avoided potential album disappointments. This guide boasts over 75,000 45s listed!
Layout for this guide is almost identical to that of the aforementioned record price guide with the exception of the variations which can include picture sleeves and colored vinyl.
With some slight variations you'll get the same healthy introduction section including the very helpful label dating section.
Bottom line - when it comes to records you simply can't have too many guides. I have specialized guides for celebrity records, jazz records, 45's and at least 2 major general record guides. Having more than one guide even at the top level is a good idea.
With any edition of a Goldmine record guide in hand your going to have a leg up since they really have their finger on the pulse of the record trade and have the ability to track pricing on a monthly basis through their large trade magazine.
Their unique connection with the market gives them the ability, presumably, to eliminate outrageously high or low pricing that can occur in guides that gather pricing information from dealers and collectors, as they do in this case. The general consensus over all of the people involved simply comes to light and, after all, this IS the market. The values in this guide would be very hard to argue against.

Title: Teddy Bear Centennial book ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
100 years with Teddy? How time flies. This book takes you from Teddy's humble beginnings when Teddy Roosevelt spared a live bear during a hunt in 1902 to his thriving family of today. Obviously Teddy has come a long way since Roosevelt had a heart and cartoonist Clifford Berryman made this little furry guy and icon and this book will lead you down that winding path.
The book is chock full of full color pictures or Teddy's of all eras and makers to go along with the various tribute and historical sections in the book.
The book starts with an overview of all of the major bear manufacturers both in the U.S. and abroad, mostly in Germany. Each of these sections includes a historical look at the company along with pictures of their Teddies.
The modern Teddy is given the head nod in the next section that is dedicated to the newer Teddy bear artists who keep the market alive. Artists and their wares are both pictured.
One of the last sections in the book is dedicated to information you need to stay on top of the "Teddy Bear Scene". The information ranges from locations of Teddy museums to lists of Associations, dealers, Auctions and other collectors.
Bottom line - If you just can't get enough Teddy's in your life this will help to keep that warm fuzzy (sorry for the pun!) feeling in your heart. Everything you need to know to get into the hobby is here and it doubles as a brief resource guide.

Title: Kitchen Collectibles, Spiffy ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
I've always had a particular fondness for kitchen collectibles. Partly this is because historically it is where some of the most whimsical items such as figural salt and pepper shakers and cookie jars are found but also because it is a collectible you can still use.
The 1940's through the 1960's produced some of the most bizarre, colorful and hip items for the kitchen and bar and this book highlights them all in 38 chapters!
Each chapter is laviously color photographed and each items features a photograph, price and brief description. Along with the profuse listings are great color reproductions of period advertisements, catalog pages and related magazine pieces to take you back to the days when some of these products were revolutionary. When you add them all up, the book includes over 1000 great color pictures.
There are simply too many categories included in this large volume to even start listing them but, suffice to say, that if a book includes a chapter devoted to corn on the cob devices, it must certainly be comprehensive.
I've always found that most super collectors best rooms tend to be the kitchen. Let's face it, it's one of the rooms we spend a great deal of time in and I've always felt it should brighten your day. You don't realize how much you need some of these devices until you actually bring them back to life in your own house.
Bottom line - by dwelling just the right amount of time on each mini category within this guide the author provides one of the most comprehensive guides on the fun side of the kitchen eras I've seen. If it's wacky, bright or over complicated for what it does, it's in this guide.

Title: Fakes & Reproductions, Guide to ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Let's face it, not all of us can afford the rarest or higher end items within the categories we collect. Quality reproductions provide the opportunity for having the look of the Collectible or Antique you covet at a fraction of the cost.
So reproductions do have a place in the market.
However, when these reproductions make their way into unscrupulous dealers who mask the fact that they are indeed reproductions, selling them as the real thing, or when less than caring manufactures fail to properly identify their items so that even a novice can tell the difference you then have what is properly termed a fake.
market has NO place for fakes.
Enter Antique Trader who's publication routinely features picture articles on properly identifying the real thing from the reproduction. Over 1000 pictures dominate this volume and often feature side by side shots with the real items. Even when this side by side comparison isn't made, there are detailed text that highlight the tell tale (but sometimes easy to miss) details to differentiate the pieces.
Though they can't possibly lay out all the reproductions and fakes currently on the market they do a very good job of highlighting some of the most popular (or is it unpopular?) pieces in 17 different categories with further breakdowns in some of the categories.
Bottom line - if your just starting out in the collecting world this book is a must. This is particularly true if you frequent the many flea markets around the country as this is where true fakes are most prevalent. The categories and the details that are highlighted will serve not only as identifiers for those particular items but these same difference serve as examples to look for in many suspect items so you would be smart to read through even the categories that may not directly interest you.
Experienced dealers and collectors don't need to be told how important this type of information is, even the best get fooled from time to time.

Title: Tobacco Collectibles, Warman's Identification and Price Guide ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Once I started smoking cigars my interest in smoking related collectibles really took off. I wanted cool cigar cutters, kitschy ashtrays and other accouterments to make the occasional smoke more of a ritual.
I think that many collectors of Tobacco related items collect them for much the same reasons I do. Ok, so maybe it's not great that your smoking but if your going to do it anyway you might as well enjoy it to its fullest. There are other reasons people collect this stuff to and there are often many cross over collectors from other areas such as advertising, non-sports trading cards, Art Deco, Art Nouvea and many others.
There are many items within this category to collect and this book does a nice job of covering many of them; Lighters, ashtrays, tins, matches and match safes, advertising items, pipes, cigar labels. There are approximately 50 smaller breakdowns from the main categories under cigars, cigarettes, Humidors, lighters, matches, pipes and tobacco. Lots of pictures throughout the book make for an enjoyable read and many sections have pictures for every item. All totaled, there are 3,000 items with 1,200 pictures.
Each item has a sufficient description that is often quite detailed when its needed along with a value. However, the book does fail to indicate how these prices are derived (retail, auction, etc.) so some real market experience might be necessary.
This guide could easily stand alone with the sheer number of listings and pictures but it doesn't stop at just a price guide. Other sections are included to help collectors out. Each of the top level sections begins with a nice introduction that can include a brief resource guide for buying the items, glossary or collector terminology, history and tips for collectors.
Bottom line - Even before I began smoking cigars in earnest I've always had a weird fascination for the culture that has been created around tobacciana. You don't have to smoke to appreciate this stuff and many of these items stand alone.
Values for many of these items might surprise the novice and relative bargains are easily passed up simply because of their sticker price. The only way to know if that table top advertising cigar cutter priced at a hefty $150 is in fact a steal is to consult a guide such as this.
This category of collecting is only going to get harder and harder to find and the prices on most of these items is likely to rise given the fact that few items are being manufactured in our current nonsmoking climate. I think that smoking collectibles make for a good investment, as does this guide.

Title: Lladro (Collecting) Identification and Price Guide ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Chances are someone in your family has at one time or another owned a Lladro figurine. They are some of the most easily recognized and popular figurines and values for some of these pieces can be staggering. Collector's are generally a very passionate bunch when it comes to their collection.
This passion is clearly illustrated through the authors work in this volume. The work that has gone into putting together a wealth of Lladro information, including heavy consultation with many at the Lladro factory itself, is extensive.
If you want to know ANYTHING about Lladro, the first part of this book has to have it. Along with the standard identification of markings and finishes, this guide goes on to give highly detailed sections on the collections/sculptures and non-figural items, buying tips, restoration advice and much more. Throughout these sections are detailed full color photographs used to illustrate specific points. As a bonus these pictures feature pricing information as well in addition to the over 100 pages of price guide at the back of the book.
The price guide is well organized by series and includes a full alphabetical listing at the back for the experienced collector familiar with titles of the pieces. Though the description are so detailed that even a beginning collector should be able to identify pieces, the guide is also loaded with more full color pictures. In total the price guide covers over 1,600 Lladro items!
Bottom line - This book goes well beyond a normal price guide. In fact, there is so much additional background information, restoration tips, buying information, etc. that I would call this two books in one.
With 125 pages of non-price guide information and and slightly more devoted solely to identification and pricing I think my case is made. It is simply the most overall comprehensive and useful Lladro book I've run across.

Title: Civil War Collectibles, Warman's ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Having lived most of my adult life in Virginia I'm all too familiar with Civil war artifacts and battles. In fact, it is probably the case that I've lived here so long that my appreciation for the relics and battlefields has been jaded. This latest offering from Warmans and Krause renews my appreciation.
Organized into 18 different categories of Civil War relics, this guide is hefty and does a great job of covering the current market. All totaled the book covers over 3,000 items and features over 1,000 pictures. Most of these pictures are in Black and White but they are very clear and, frankly, most of the stuff pictured is Silver, Black or Brown anyway. There is a small center color section as well that highlights many of the better items.
Each of the categories begins with a very informal introduction that is very telling of the love the author has for the field and the guide as a long term project. The introduction is followed by a statistics box of sorts that included pros and cons to the category. These pros and cons refer to both ideology of the collector itself as well as the survivability of the materials, difficulties within the category itself and much more. In other words its not a cut and dry bland pros and cons list as you might think. The statistics include a super easy to understand star system to indicate availability, price level and rarity.
Don't panic if you don't know what a "Daguerreotype", "Guidon" or "Ricasso" is, each section also includes the relevant terminology at the end of each category.
Bottom line - this guide represents a good buy both for the novice and experienced collector. Each of the 18 sections begins with some useful information that includes reproduction alerts which will be of the utmost important for the beginning collector who is likely to get stung during the learning process.
Even the most experienced collector has to appreciate this guide if for no other reasons than the sheer volume of information and items pictured.

Title: Introduction to Krause's latest Jewelry guides ![]()
There are many categories that really benefit by having multiple references to provide a thorough overview of the field. The more information you have the better since even the most complete guides can't include everything within a large field such as jewelry.
I've mentioned it before but jewelry is one of the largest categories out there with no end to the variations in maker, materials used and age.
By arming yourself with one or more of the guides mentioned you stand a better chance of survival, and profit, in the market.

Read Introduction to Krause's latest jewelry guides first
Aimed at the beginning collector, this guide is pretty straight forward and features what I'm guessing is a few hundred individual pieces.
Basically the guide includes a color grouping of pieces every other page with the details and pricing information on the facing page with a few extra pages that have both the picture and text on a single page. Unfortunately there is no real organization to the guide and pieces from different eras and/or different materials are often grouped together. More often than not the description text excludes dating information and is quite brief.
Prices noted are a grouping of asking prices from flea markets to shops but listings fail to indicate where the individual prices come from which leaves a lot of room since clearly prices at flea markets are/should be generally significantly lower than those in retail shops or shows.
Bottom line - though it's always fun to see someone's collection, this guide is somewhat limited in terms of real usability within the market since it really doesn't include enough variations or solid information for the beginning collector to make generalizations.

Title: Rhinestone Jewelry, a Price and Identification Guide ![]()
![]()

Read Introduction to Krause's latest jewelry guides first
As the name denotes, this guide deals exclusively with Rhinestone jewelry. Rhinestone jewelry remains one of the more popular categories of jewelry and continues to be relatively easy to find.
The book begins with the complete introduction to the world of Rhinestone jewelry. Following the history of the "stones" themselves you'll get a beginners course of everything from the cuts and settings used to background on some of the more highly prized named designers who's signatures can boost values significantly.
After that you ready for the bulk of this book which is done completely in stunning color. Over 500 pieces are shown and the selection includes pieces under $20 to pieces that sell for many hundreds. By including all of these ranges the author has provided a useful guide for everyone in the market and with so many pieces illustrated takes much of the guess work out of making comparisons to other similar pieces found.
Bottom line - As I've mentioned, Rhinestone jewelry is still one of those categories where finds persist. At one time or another it seems like everyone had at least some Rhinestone jewelry and with the usual moniker of "costume" many individuals sell them well below their try market value. With the broad spectrum of pieces covered this guide should serve you well not only as a wake up call to the value of some of these pieces but also the difference between the under $50 pieces and the truly valuable designer pieces.

Title: Jewelry, Answers to Questions about Old ![]()

Read Introduction to Krause's latest jewelry guides first
This guide really packs a wallop and goes well beyond the requirements of a decent price guide. This is another one of those rare guides that could easily be broken into two volumes; a price guide and a reference guide.
In terms of the price guide portion of the book your certainly not going to be slighted. 2000 items from all decades are covered and every item includes a clear picture. Most pictures are in Black and White but the descriptions fill in any color questions and by using mostly Black and White photos your provided with more information at a very affordable cost. There is a 30+ page color section in the center as well that highlights some of the more dazzling pieces.
Pricing information includes the critical information regarding the venue with a simple letter code to indicate auction sale, collector asking price or dealer asking price. With the inclusion of the dealers business name you can easily check into the sanity of the asking price mentioned by doing a little research. This additional information is a real bonus since asking prices are just that and the best pricing information is the actual sale result.
In addition to the healthy introduction (generally well over 10 pages for each section) for each time period section, this guide provides some of the best information I've run across in terms of identifying and dating jewelry.
There is a great section called "Circa Dating Clues" which provides information on hardware used during different times in addition to popular motifs, materials generally used and jewels used. Combine this section with the large makers mark section and you'll be well armed indeed to nail down the basic information.
The "Is it Real?" section provides information that in addition to notes mentioned in the individual sections gives you both visual clues as well as simple test to verify that a piece is authentic and/or valuable.
Bottom line - if you are limited financially from purchasing more than one of Krause's latest guides this is probably the one to start with. It's the most robust and provides good introductory materials for the beginner as well. The wealth of information included will benefit the more experienced collector and dealer as well.
This is a must buy for anyone involved in jewelry and the coverage, 1840-1950, if broader than most other guides in this field.

Title: Bird Decoys and Duck Calls, Collecting Antique ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
I can't say that I relish the idea of getting up predawn, sitting in a cold "blind" and waiting to shoot at ducks though I'm sure it possesses a certain Zen quality for some. However, I have always admired the folk art nature of decoys and I even have a couple lying around someplace from when my buying was less controlled.
I'm certain my decoys were very reasonably priced and are likely not very valuable but some of these works of art can fetch 10's of thousands of dollars. When you enter a market such as this where prices can start at $25 and go well past $30,000, you had better be armed to the teeth with knowledge.
The decoy portion of the book is divided by traditional carved decoys (and then by region), factory made decoys and finally the very up and coming "modern" decoys.
Each section features multiple Black and White photos along with details of manufacture and retail values. Additionally with the known artists of decoys a range of values is given to encompass both ends of the spectrum.
Don't be frightened of this category of collecting if you not familiar with hunting collectibles or decoys, the author provides not only detailed history on the decoys themselves along with the artists/factories that made/make them but also provides a detailed and complete dictionary of terminology so you too will be speaking like and expert in little time. Market trend analysis and buying and caring for tips will give you a leg up starting a collection and keeping it in tip-top condition.
The guide doesn't stop with decoys but continues with other hunting related items with special focus on game calls. After all, what good are prime decoys if the ducks and geese, etc. aren't there? A large color section with highlights from various parts of the book and roughly 100 pages of decoy and hunting paraphernalia advertising reproductions from 1927-1965 complete the guide nicely.
Bottom line - In its 3rd edition, this guide leaves little to want and provides something for every level of collector/dealer.
Whether your just interested in the history of these collectibles or want to start collecting in earnest, you'll enjoy this guide as it hits the mark in both regards.

Title: Py/Miyao Fun Kitchen Collectibles Reference and Value Guide ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Quick, what's the first room in the house you have the fondest memories of? Nine out of ten of you likely respond with the kitchen and for good reason. Sure that's where all the great olfactory memories reside but if your a collector it is also probably a source of early influence for your collecting nature.
Depending on when you were born you either remember the more traditional cooking accouterments and appliances or the much more fun world of brilliant colors, figural cookie jars and every other item with either whimsical designs or an actual face smiling back at you!
If you a member of the latter group, then your no doubt familiar with "PY" or "Miyao" marked items, whether you realize it or not. These items are some of the most recognizable figurals, anthropomorphic fruit and vegetable items and Rooster adorned kitchen items on the market today.
From their origin, in the U.S. shortly after the sorrowful war years in 1949, the Miyao company (whose items were also often marked "PY") produced nothing but items that couldn't help but to brighten your spirits. That's as much true today as it was back then.
Probably one of the most widely available, and most widely copied, items out of this company are the "Rooster and Roses" pattern dinnerware which is often called "Early provincial" in the collecting market today. The pattern has bright Yellow edging with Red streaks while the base of the pieces has a vine motif with large Rooster(s) as the center of the design with large Rose blooms at least on either side of the Rooster. This pattern continues today to be one of the more popular 50's patterned dinnerware. The guide illustrates in full color virtually, if not completely, all of the available pieces produced along with measurements and values.
Much harder to find but in my opinion the heart of this company's wares, and soul if you read the extensive background on it's founders, are the kooky "face" and fruit and vegetable people items. From Apple faces to happy and crying Pear faces, the guide fills well over 40 pages with campy face items for the kitchen. When just the face isn't enough then throw a body on your fruit, flower or vegetable and you get another 25 pages or so to make those leftovers seem like haute cuisine.
It is in these sections that the value of all color photographs really comes into play and items really jump off the page and beg you to collect them.
Bottom line - if your not a fan of a whimsical themed kitchen before you buy this guide, you will be after you leaf through it. Who could resist?
Utilizing the largest collection of these items belonging to the estate of the founder of the company this book represents the most comprehensive guide on "PY/Miyao" as well as a good reference point for all lesser quality anthropomorphic kitchen items produced by many other companies.

Title: Antiques, Schroeder's Price Guide ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
With the new year come the new general price guides and Schroeder's offerings have always been at or near the top of the heap. This years volume is no exception.
Top level guides such as this represent some of the best values in price guides out there. With their overview on many areas within Antiques or Collectibles, they provide both the beginning and experienced collector with an overview of the markets.
The best of these guide has a finger on the pulse of the current trends and new markets. Shroeder's is again one of the best at keeping up to date and the reason is simple; they utilize hundreds of experts in the various fields as advisors. Even well established older categories are updated and edited to provide the best information and pricing.
These advisors are more than just dealers in the market but, more often than not, authorities in their field often publishing specialized guides themselves.
Each section/category starts with a brief but concise history of the category, reproduction alerts, when they exist, along with information on the advisor and suggested additional reading to get more detailed information and pricing. There are pictures here and there but the concentration in this guide is to pack it with as much information as possible. Descriptive text is brief but usually sufficient for a proper identification.
Values are provided with the criteria that condition is the best condition for that individual category without the need to mention any blemishes or defects. As an example, paper items will generally show pricing for excellent condition since finding such items in better condition after even just storage wear is unlikely. I mention this ideology simply because I have found it to be unique to Shroeder's guides.
Bottom line - in it's 22nd edition, I've stopped looking for any faults with this guide. It is a "must have" for just about everyone and remains on both my must have book list for Antique dealers as well as must have book list for Collectible dealers for yet another year. Beginning collectors and dealers simply have to buy this book.

Title: Betty Boop Memorabilia with Values, The Definitive Guide to ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Before there was Marilyn, there was Betty! Is it wrong to be attracted to a cartoon? Well maybe but that's something to discuss with my shrink.
I guess I'm not the only one with this affliction given that this guide is written by a man!
Betty Boop continues to this day with much more modern merchandise available than pieces from the 1930's and 40's. This guide does a very good job of capturing all of the merchandise, new and old, in 18 chapters covering various categories.
Dominated by full color pictures on every page, the guide does a very thorough job of describing each item in great detail. The details provided usually can stand alone even without a picture and provide not only the detailed descriptions but history of a piece and a rarity rating.
Not only is this the first book of it's kind detailing Betty Boop collectibles, it is likely to be the only one your going to come across save for revised editions (which may never be produced) so it is again one of those guides that you should buy now if your a collector.
Bottom line - strike while the iron is hot if your a Betty enthusiast. There seems little reason for another guide to be produced as this one covers Boop collectibles completely.

Title: Toys Price Guide, Schroeder's guide to Antique to Modern ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Though this guide has been on my must have book list for Collectible dealers since the inception of this review feature, I have never done a full review so I was excited to receive the latest edition of this must have guide.
This is one of those guides that I actually collect. I have 9 of 9 on our shelves and more than once I have utilized past editions for research and comparisons.
The Huxford's do an equally comprehensive job on this guide as they do on "Schroeder's Antiques" (another must have!) and the format is nearly identical. Make sure you read their Antiques guide review for layout facts I might omit in this review to save repeating myself.
In the Antiques edition I may skip over a category or two for lack of interest on my part but with this guide I carefully thumb through each and every page. For the new toy collector, this method is a great way to familiarize him/herself with the various current popular markets out there.
Advisors for individual categories are again used in this guide and the Huxfords make a concerted effort to find only those advisors who are truly authorities for their category with many of these contributors being authors themselves within their fields.
By breaking down the categories among many contributors it allows this guide to be completely revamped each and every edition. This includes not only the addition of new, hot, categories and the subtraction of some less popular categories but also a complete update on values of existing core categories. Though still just a guide, because of the way it is put together it is one of the most reliable.
Alphabetically arranged categories start with a history of the category, reproduction alerts, when they exist, and information on the contributing advisor. Pricing and descriptions are straight forward and brief but, more often than not, provide all the details you'll need for identification including an indicator when values are auction results.
Again, the other pricing ideology and layout features are nearly identical to "Schroeder's Antiques" so read that review if I haven't gushed enough about this guide already.
Bottom line - Short and simple, collectors and dealers alike must buy this guide. With this review, Schroeder's Toys remains on my must have list for Collectibles dealers.

Title: Little Golden Books, Collecting, A Collector's Identification & Price Guide ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
The one thing I've always loved about toy, and especially character based, collecting is the sheer diversity of the types of collectibles it encompasses.
There are games, sheet sets, wind-ups, action toys, dolls, bendys and, well, you get the idea. One of the categories that has historically had a thread to almost every popular character of the day has been Little Golden books and records.
Along with their great character items, Little Golden books has also found the time to educate along the way and has produced many children's classics collected simply for the memories they hold.
In its 5th edition, this guide provides a visual walk through what certainly must be every Little Golden book produced to date.
Little Golden Books can be a little tricky since many popular titles have been redone many times and continue to this day. Values for these editions are definitely not the same and the author spends some time educating you on the coding system for the various editions. Along with this, other helpful information such as cover price will help to narrow down the earliest, and valuable, editions.
With as many as a dozen titles on each page the guide is easy to read and enjoyable to thumb through. Pictures for every book are provided in Black and White with an additional center color section. The price guide has every piece of information you will need to identify and value your book. This includes the title and author but also adds the ever important edition information, book number and value for a book in VF to Mint condition which the author explains in his preface information along with a brief description of price determination for the guide.
For those whose attraction to a particular title was based on its illustrator versus the story, there is a handy reverse look up directory at the back of the book that lists all of the illustrators and the books they contributed to.
As many people know, Western Publishing/Printing doesn't stop with the classic "Little Golden Book" titles but goes quite a bit further. As with the companies offerings, the guide doesn't stop with Little Golden Books either and what you really end up getting is a price guide to Western Publishing/Printing to include "Big Little Golden Books", "Ding Dong School Books", Activity books, promotional and foreign books, products based on the Little Golden characters, and tons more. The master book title index at the back of the book will help to direct you to the particular Western series of your past favorite.
This guide delves quite heavily into an equally well documented listing of Little Golden Records. As with the books, Mr. Santi provides a reverse look up by song title for us aging collectors humming our pleasantly haunting childhood tunes. I believe this is the only guide that will provide you with any section on the Little Golden records.
Bottom line - when your an out of control collector such as myself you tend to grow the most fondness for the smaller of collectible categories. My rather impressive collection of mostly character based Little Golden Books takes up mere feet on the shelves.
Little Golden books in particular are a collectible that, because of the various editions/years produced, lends itself to misidentification and assignment of a higher market value that they actually represent. This guide is a much needed one and with the inclusion of other Western titles and most importantly the Golden Records, room should be made on both Little Golden and character tie-in collectors library shelves alike.

Title: Jewelry, Plastic, of the Twentieth Century Identification and Value Guide ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Give me a Collectible or Antique you can use in your everyday life and I'm much more likely to take a second look. Maybe it's just rationalization but as an unreigned in collector, rationalization is all I've got! Granted, in the case of jewelry I'm not likely to wear it out on the street but to those who collect it it is a big bonus to be able to enjoy it on a daily basis.
This guide was original published in 1992 and this volume represents and update performed by the previous contributing author. Values have been revamped for the current market.
Despite generalized terms such as Bakelite and Celluloid among collectors referring to many forms of plastics, this book begins with a brief introduction to the various forms and names utilized for plastics used in jewelry along with some tips on collecting and preserving pieces. More on this later.
Price ranges are meant to take into account not only condition of the pieces but also the venue and the result is a range of values that reflects the secondary market in which most of these pieces are found. These venues will tend to be retail shops and the Internet and obviously if a piece can be found, for example, at a yard sale, the value/price would be significantly less (or should be!). Despite these caveats, the ranges are fully acceptable and short and leave little guess work.
From figural pins to eyeglasses and purses, there's lots to look at in this guide and you'll be treated to a huge amount of beautiful, detailed color shots which were taken, for the most part, by an award winning photographer.
The last little bit of the photo section suffers somewhat due to what I can only assume is a function of this being a revamping of an early guide as the last of the pictures are in Black and White. Not a flaw as such since it is a very small fraction of the total number of photos included. Additionally, the descriptive text is sufficient for the color information. It's just a little bit anticlimactic after all the previous full color shots. Call me greedy.
As I promised, the issue regarding the various forms of the often grouped and generalized plastics is fully exposed through one of the three included appendices called "The ABC's of Plastic". This section fully explores various forms of plastics and includes helpful information such as it's historical uses, acceptable damage, and, most importantly, identifying characteristics. If your interested in the various forms of these plastics this is very helpful since short of chemical or semi-destructive tests this is the only way to attempt to identify the plastic utilized. Its a fascinating section but don't worry if you can't memorize them, generally the market continues to generalize these various plastics under the Bakelite and Celluloid names and few will call you on it.
As you can see, there is no shortage of information provided in addition to the price guide portion of this book and the inclusion of two cross reference guides, one by designer name and one by jewelry type, provide potential shortcuts to valuing your piece against similar ones. This feature is often lacking in guides such as this and the inclusion is simply a function of the expertise of the author(s).
Bottom line - I'm in the habit of comparing various editions of price guides in the interest of market analysis and I can't begin to tell you what has happened to the Bakelite market in the ten years since the original release of this guide but suffice to say that it's a seller's market.
Even if you own the older edition of this guide, as I do, I urge you to purchase this updated volume. There's a good chance it will pay for itself.

Title: Trunks, Antique Identification and Price Guide ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Normally I frown on guides with wide ranges of value for a single item but it simply can't be avoided with a guide of this sort. It is simply a matter of condition being the critical factor. Fortunately, the authors, too, realize this and provide what is essentially a condition questionnaire with which you can narrow down individual trunk values based on the answers to the condition questions. In fact, the authors go into considerable detail regarding the valuing of antique trunks and provide additional information within 5 different condition categories utilized as one of the questions on the questionnaire.
As result of this additional attention and information provided by the authors any negatives I might normally attribute to range guides disappears.
Sorry, I got a little ahead of myself, and the guide.
The book starts with over 70 pages of price guide. Each page not only provides a detailed description of the trunks shown but the pictures are in blazing color and often provide good detailed close-ups of important features and highlights to consider on the better trunks. The basic descriptions of the trunks make-up is often elaborated upon to include historical information and/or important points to note. Additionally, there is a section further along in the guide that provides close-ups of locks utilized from 1780-1935 to help you with identification.
Once your hooked on trunks you'll obviously want to explore the other sections of the guide which include color plates of trunk labels, advertising, patent drawings and more.
Bottom line - Here's a collectible item with a dual purpose, it's valuable and you can put more stuff inside it!! With the authors noting recent purchases they've made for $50 with a market value of $3500 it seems clear that there are bargains to be had for the knowledgeable buyer and potential loses to be had for the uneducated seller. Guide in hand, maybe the two can meet in the middle!

Clearly I have to learn to sew. Here is yet another book that features patterns to increase your collection.
This one features 12 patterns to make quality stuffed animals. The term stuffed animal is somewhat of a misnomer here as these finished animals are quite detailed and, often, posable. The instructions for these animals look so simple that I'm tempted to at least try and make my personal favorite, Viola the Monkey (though I would have to add a fez or bellhop hat!).
O.K., I'm too lazy but suffice to say that most instructions only take up 2 pages and large format at that. The author even gives helpful sewing techniques that are unique to making such animals.
Bottom line - If you have the patience and time these dolls would make great heirloom quality gifts for that special someone and I wouldn't be surprised to see one or two on the after market years from now.

Title: Comic Related Collectibles Survival & Price Guide ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
This pocketbook size guide starts with a basic introduction to collecting Comic, and mostly superhero related, collectibles. By "survival" the authors refer to collecting in a fluctuating market without being taken advantage of and minimizing any potential loses. Along with the introduction to the culture, the guide includes sections on the care, buying and selling (survival) and grading of collectibles.
As I mentioned, the guide is largely made up of superhero related collectibles and there is a heavy concentration on the more modern toys. Though you'll find some 60's, 70's and 80's toys noted most are from the 90's and 2000+.
Bottom line - This may be a good book for the very young, beginning, collector, but most other collectors will be disappointed by the coverage.
The up front discussions about "survival" and grading are simple and straightforward introductions for the younger, less experienced, collectors and may serve as a nice introduction to collecting.
Many of the items in the book are still very speculative in terms of value to start with and you'll get more overall information purchasing a general toy price guide.

Title: Purse Masterpieces Identification & Value Guide ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
I trust that with the boom in Vintage Clothing popularity these days that we can expect more and more guides on the subject. Since they are still seriously lacking behind other guides I'm always excited to see a new title dealing with clothing and accessories.
Purses can really make the difference between an ok vintage inspired look and a head turning outfit. With the purses featured in this guide you could be wearing jeans and a ratty T-shirt and still get attention. They are, as the guide denotes, works of art unto themselves.
These purses may not be for everybody and we're not talking about the flashy vinyl of the 1960's and 1970's here. This guide focuses on heavily decorated purses, vanity bags and compact purses from the 1700's to the 1930's. The terms "masterpiece" isn't used lightly here and refers not only to the collectability of the bags for the beauty but also the cost involved and the potential for increased value as an investment. Oh yeah, and you can use them too!
As if it needs to be said after you take a look at some of the brilliant color pictures of purse after purse, the author spends a good deal of time making the case for recognizing these bags as works of art tying many purses directly to the works of art they represent or emulate. An equal or greater number of pages are dedicated to the makeup and making of both mesh and fabric purses.
These informational sections are mixed in with the price guide so what you get is a full historical and value education. However, the sections are broken down into; Mesh purses, Fabric purses, Rarities, Vanity bags and Compact purses, frames, Children's purses and Celluloid so you can get right to the value meat if you simply can't wait.
Bottom line - With starting prices of $200 or so for the simplest of early purses and many in the $500+ range it's worth investing in a guide before you leap into collecting these beautiful examples or, even worse, pass up a true value simply because of the "expensive" price tag.
Often specialized guides such as this have very similar price ranges throughout the featured items but that is certainly not the case with these bags and generalizations can be dangerous, and costly.

Title: Introduction to Krause's latest Comic Book guides ![]()
I've tried over the years to essentially remove myself as a "collector" and transition to a "dealer". The process requires shifting your enjoyment from owning great items to enjoying the excitement generated by passing it along to an enthusiastic collector.
It's tough!
I have made the transition about 90 percent but there are still a few hold outs on my part; my 12" GI Joe collection, my "Noddy" English character collection, my monkeys (of course!) and my original comic book collection. My comics are really one of the first full blown collections I put together despite having just about everything I've ever bought or been given (including gum ball machine toys.....am I sick or what?).
I believe that when the values in these collections hits a certain point the transition to dealer mode will become automatic so I try and keep my eye on these categories.
Krause has put together two new guides revolving around the world of comic book collecting.
The first is a retrospective of the great comic books of the 1960's for the Baby Boomers out there

while the other one is a traditional price guide. |

Title: Comics, Look Out! It's Baby Boomer ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
I have to say that at first I thought the term "Baby Boomer' was a cute name for the group that I fall into but as the years progressed I find myself cringing more and more at its use when you realize that the youngest of Boomers is 40 years old! Still, we did have a few cool things happen and I was around for this one, the Silver Age of comics. Though it starts in the late 50's, the bulk of the Silver Age falls into the 1960's and it's the subject of this look back at the comics, characters and creators we loved then and love even more now.
Maybe I should correct myself her since this guide does indeed have a Silver Age price guide but since it only amounts to 5 pages out of the book I think the value is more in the educational and enjoyable read.
Loaded with trivia quizzes and pop quizzes to test your comprehension, this book is all over the place and that's a good thing. With the exception of a section on the origin of the Silver Age don't expect the normal redone character history in this book. Instead the author picks apart the Silver Age with such probing subjects as DC Comics preoccupation with Gorillas, Superman's dog's, Krypto, lead canine team; The Space Canine Patrol Agents (S.C.P.A.) and lesser talked about Silver Age stars such as Herbie, Jerry Lewis, The Wasp and others.
Bottom line - The book is a thoroughly enjoyable read for any comic enthusiast with a price guide as a bonus. There is very little rehashing of materials covered in other similar looks back at characters and comics.

Title: Comics, The Standard Catalog of ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Krause has to be taking a beating on utilizing there standard shipping rates for this guide, it weighs 6 pounds! I may skip the gym this week.
You can't possibly pack any more information into this guide without getting sued for mass hernias. The print is just at the limit of readable size and is reported to include well over 150,000 comics. These 150,000+ listings further breakdown by issue and each individual issue includes detailed information.
Comic guides are very competitive and they all want to stand out as the authority over the other established guides. Along these lines and unique to this comic guide is the addition of the auction values for "CGC" officially graded comics in online auctions for the past year. These graded comics are graded by an independent grading company who grades the comics then puts them in super protective covers with grading information at the top.
This auction information proves valuable since values in the guide top out at NM non-CGC graded and the addition of the grading these days produces auctions results that can reach as high as ten times the list "NM" value. It seems clear that spending for the CGC services if you have some early, popular, issues is well worth it.
Of course the auction information is included along with a regular wealth of information that includes; issue numbers and dates, cover price and Near Mint (9.4) values (with multiplication factors at the bottom of each page for other gradings), publisher and, often, in depth background on the title, storylines, reviews and the appearance of important characters.
Bottom line - I think even if you've made another small investment in another comic guide this is a welcome addition particularly with the auction results as one of the best ways to sell single early comics is via online auctions.
In the past I have bought Overstreet's comic guide and though I haven't seen the latest edition (the publisher as of yet does not participate in our feature) I am switching to this guide as my default comic guide for it's coverage and scope.
It also now replaces Overstreet on my collectibles dealer must have list
By the way, a hardcover version is also available and for only about $15 more I highly recommend it for a book of this size.
