Title: Hull Pottery Identification & Price Guide, Warman's [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

Think Hull stuck with Brown, Green and White serving pieces and squared planters? Your in for a surprise.

Hull can keep up with the best of them both in terms of Art pottery as well as modern designs and this guide will enlighten many about the varied offerings of this long running company.

The format is not unlike that adopted by most guides of this type and but mixes it up a little in terms of layout, interspersing old advertisements with the various sized full color pictures of the various pieces within each line. Brief introductions to each of these lines is followed by a basic value chart for all of the items and variations between the pieces themselves.

Bottom line - Hull remains one of the more affordable 50's and 60's pottery lines and this visual guide does a nice job of providing the full scope of this companies offerings.

Title: Coca-Cola Collectibles Identification & Price Guide, Warman's [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

They have said that things go better with a Coke, well they certainly would if you owned just a few of the items shown in this guide!

The author could arguably be called the Soda collecting King and he has done numerous books on Soda Pop collecting. Of course because of the early history and suaveness of Coca-Cola with regards to merchandising, it's easy to fill a guide with their Collectibles and even then just provide an overview.

The author doesn't waste a whole lot of space in this guide but opts to provide tons of full color pictures of just about everything Coke has produced over the years. Prices are developed through the years of his collecting, buying and researching Coke so it's hard to argue with them despite his noting, as he should, that variations occur.

The front section of this guide is brief but well packed and includes how to spot those fake or "fantasy" items along with a picture based condition guide and history of Coca-Cola "signature"

Bottom line - Like to buy the World a Coke? Better start collecting now or you'll never afford it! Coke collectors already own all the guides on the market and this one holds its own next to any of its counterparts.

Title: Fishing Collectibles Identification & Price Guide [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

In fishing it is often the lures or the rods or the reels that get the attention in the price guides. What about us out of control collectors who simply can't focus that finely within a collecting category? This guides scratches out itch!

Large format, close-up pictures make up the bulk of this guide that is organized first by item and then by manufacturer. Introduction to each of the main sections provide details about the individual markets, terminology used and more. Values are generally derived from real sales information and other reliable data from detailed sales research.

Bottom line - Those interested in any aspect of fishing collectibles will love the bright and bold full color look of this guide, the values provided don' t hurt either!

Title: North American Indian Artifacts Identification & Price Guide [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

It amazes me the survivability of the items included in this guide that spans everything from everyday clothing and implements to extraordinary ceremonial pieces.

The full color pictures show not only the beauty of the pieces but the sheer quality of craftsmanship and detail in even what would appear to be the most mundane of items. Of course they're far from mundane when you go into the market to buy some of them. Fortunately, and maybe surprisingly, there are still many very affordable pieces for a beginner to get into this ever growing field of collecting.

History and origin are equally as important in this field and this guide provides nice introductory material to each of the sections that are generally broken down by region of the Country/tribes. Additional historical information is provided within the descriptive text that is followed by a single price point that includes the actual auction house and date of auction. In terms of values and despite various factors in fluctuations of prices, this type of value is as good as it gets.

Bottom line - The rich history of the North American Indians is well illustrated in this guide chock full of color photos. With the values attained by many of these pieces often reaching that of a car (or even some homes!) it's advisable that you have a guide should you decide to jump into this varied market....here it is.

Title: Guitars, Classic Identification & Price Guide [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

I'm excited about this one. Many a time I've come across guitars but have simply lacked the background necessary to make a smart buy so, more often than not, I've passed it by. I'm sure I'm not alone in knowing only the most well known models.

This guide is a great start towards familiarizing yourself with guitars that can range in price from as little as a couple of hundred dollars to thousands. This is not as obvious a field as some might think and you can easily get fooled by a guitar that despite it's having a great look is only worth a few hundred dollars. The opposite can occur as well and a rather plain looking guitar can be worth thousands.

The guide is alphabetically arranged by manufacture and each page is dedicated to a particular guitar model. You'll be greeted by a brilliant full color photo of each model along with a detailed description which includes important design elements, various detail information specific to that model along with some company background. Some guitars even note important musicians who used the particular model.

Bottom line - Long needed, this guide serves as a great reference not only for collectors and dealers but also for musicians looking to invest in a quality instrument for their own use.

Title: Fiesta, Warman's Companion [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

Fiesta threw in a little wrench to their own collectible arena when they began to produce new pieces some years ago. It has resulted in some confusion for many collectors and even some dealers in the market. Both collectors and dealers know that often times finding a piece to buy more often than not requires a spot decision and coming back may either not be an option (in the case of, for example, an estate sale) or may result in the piece being snapped up by the next passer by.

As the name denotes, this is a companion guide to Warman's full sized coverage of Fiesta. It is produced for just such a reason as I've noted above and it's compact size is purposeful to provide easy access to information in the field where it can be critical. The format is similar to it's larger brother guide and it can easily be used as a full fledged guide on its own.

The guide includes not only the vintage pieces and post 1986, when they began production again, pieces but also a smattering of special produced items as well. Full color pictures along with important identification information such as colors, bottom stamps and listing of "new" pieces produced provide you with a valuable reference in the field or at home. Values are provided for individual pieces in all colors available.

Bottom line - The only decision you need to make with Warman's companion guides is which ones to put in your glove compartment and which ones to put in your trunk! Personally, I tossed my spare tire to make room for more.

Like most of its counterparts, this guide provides a well selected cross section of information to provide the most needed information for field purchases. The familiar layout means there's no fumbling when time is critical.

Title: McCoy, Warman's Companion [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

We have Warman's McCoy full size book on our shelves but I find myself referring to their companion guides more and more often and generally find what I'm looking for due to the surprising coverage.

Color pictures are the norm with the Companion series and it makes all the difference with items like this where quick visual identification is important for lesser known pieces. With over 800 pictures, it surpasses many full size guides on the market today.

Despite its great compact size, you'll get all the information provided by any price guide. Dimensions, year(s) of production and values are provided. Additional values are also included for variations in design or color that add extra value.

Bottom line - If money is tight and you can only afford one of the two of the Warman McCoy duo, this is the one to get. Very complete coverage along with portable size make it the most versatile for those on a budget.

Title: Limoges Price Guide, Antique Trader's [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

Limoges is a general term for hard paste, and usually beautifully hand decorated, porcelain produced by many companies in the Limoges region of France. It is a term too often loosely used by dealers and collectors alike and the distinction between this and other porcelains can be significant in terms of value.

Many people wrongly assume that Limoges is held to plates and cups & saucers but the range is vast and includes lamps, paintings (on porcelain), pictures frames, match holders and just about every piece related to eating and serving food. There are so many items that this guide is easily deviled into 34 chapters devoted to each category of items. After brief introductions, the chapters don't waste time in presenting beautiful full color photo after photo of the items along with important company information that even includes the artist when identified. Values are provided and the author provides some very interesting insight into the valuation method of determining "value" in the front section of the book, it's brief but to the point and well worth reading.

The back section of the book provides visual mark identifications and spans some 25 pages. Marks on anything Antique is usually a huge hurdle for any collector or dealer and knowing these marks, or at least having handy references such as this, can spell extra value or profit.

Bottom line - Almost every piece pictured in here is arguably a piece of Art and Art shouldn't be bought lightly. As with fine paintings (which some of these are!), research is necessary to make the right investment whether it's for your own use or for investment purposes.

Title: Weller Pottery, Warman's Identification and Price Guide [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

If the Authors last name sounds familiar, it should. In addition to producing other price guides, Rago's Art and Auction center specializes in the best of the best in decorative arts. You will always find a nice selection of high end and up and coming ceramics at Rago's.

Weller has for many years been the ugly step child of many other, more well known, ceramic lines coming out of arguably the hub of 20th century ceramics; Zanesville, Ohio.

Relatively speaking, Weller is still affordable for even the poorest of collectors with many pieces still in the $100-150 range. Many pieces, however, have already made the leap to true pieces of decorative arts and can cost thousands. Though dealers place a premium on the Weller name, many still can't differentiate all of the various Weller lines so opportunities for profit or extra value are still out there.

Broken down by the various Weller lines, each section includes an introduction to the history of the various patterns/styles of Weller along with full color pictures (large format when necessary to call attention to detail), descriptions of piece decorations, sizes and auction values.

Various helpful introductory materials at the front of the guide include illustrated marks, production dates and proper evaluation techniques.

Bottom line - Often times it is hard to gauge the validity of valuations and market coverage with many guides as many of the authors are, at their core, simply good collectors with a large collection. This is not the case with this guide and you can have little doubt of the values quoted as they are actual auction values. You can easily determine retail values with this solid, real, base.

Title: Paintings, American Identification & Values [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

Though you certainly will find values for the various artists offerings at the back of this guide, it is more of a college course on collecting American paintings than it is a price guide.

Extensive information is provided in the first 100 pages or so to prepare you to jump into a market that can often reach hundreds of thousands of dollars. However, it is still a market that can be gotten into for under $2,000 as well so this preparation is of paramount importance before you buy either for yourself or for an investment (or both!).

The second large section of the guide is devoted to the various "themes" often utilized to focus a collection. These can include the obvious choices such as still life, impressionism and portraits but also can include regional art from established areas of the country where artists flourished.

The bulk of the rest of the guide provides some more valuable information once you've started your collection and includes such things as establishing the provenance and proper identification of the work, proper display and much more.

Finally, you'll find a range of values by artist at the back of the book.

Bottom line - This is an area of collecting that I think many people shy away from. True, some are frightened by the relative price tag of original art but I think more importantly it is an intimidating area of collecting and collectors are scared of making a "mistake".

Knowing who's who and what's what along with acquiring a general education in American art should eliminate at least the latter fear. This guide reads like the best of college course text and it's much more interesting. Even the most modest of collector will find this guide very informative and it may very well provide that last little push you need to give this rewarding market a try.

Title: Royal Doulton Price Guide, Antique Trader's [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

It's rare when a manufacture becomes a top contender in more than one market. With Royal Doulton, you get three! First, with their figurines, next with their Toby Mugs/Jugs and finally with their art pottery. There's lots more of course but ini these three categories they can easily play with the biggest of boys in the yard.

Even many experienced collectors will be surprised by the wealth of items Royal Doulton has produced and it takes a full 10 chapters to provide the overview. Each chapter has lots of full color close-up pictures (there are over 1,200 in the guide) and over 2,000 items are covered in the various sections.

Even without the accompanying pictures, items are easily identified with the over descriptive text that accompanies all but the very basic of items. Unfortunately, pricing is not specifically identified (though its specific expert source is) but I suspect that it is retail value.

Bottom line - This guide really opens up the full Doulton world and both experienced collectors and dealers alike are likely to have their eyes opened to the often overlooked Doulton lines that are out there. New Doulton collectors may curse the choices presented and will have a difficult time narrowing their focus.

Title: Farm Collectibles Identification & Price Guide, American [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

From advertising items to Chicken casserole dishes to full size Tractors, the tie-ins to the farm seem endless and I'm hard pressed to find one that the author has missed in this guide. It's not just about tools and equipment anymore.

It is the perspective that the author has and the scope covered that makes this guide just plain fun and a surprise to most peoples expectations from the title. I've seen guides before that cover this subject but they have always focused on farm work versus farm life and all it encompasses.

Just to name a few categories covered you'll find toys, advertising signs and tins, tools, kitchen collectibles and even fishing related collectibles. Color pictures fill most pages and make it just plain fun to leaf through. The addition of original catalog reprints in the back of the guide provide not only more nostalgia but also seldom seen reference materials for you collections. Values are provided and are primarily culled from online auction results.

Bottom line - Collectors of all types are likely to find this guide enjoyable if not useful. It is a testament to how a collectors mind works (or doesn't!) and shows that collecting can be as controlled or uncontrolled as your imagination dictates. If your into farming or just the country mind set, you'll enjoy this guide.

Title: Star Wars Super Collector's Wish Book [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

O.K., with the 3rd edition of this dangerously heavy guide I have to confess that I can no longer read the tiny index! It's small for a reason, any larger and you couldn't fit all the items in.

Little changed save for values and more pictures, the guide packs so many items that you'll think you've gone over to the dark side. I say little changed but that's because it only changes when new Star Wars items are produced or found since it already includes everything known on the market.

Fans are quick to contact the author and provide information and pictures for any items that he might have missed so your assured of the most complete guide on the market today with over 30,000 items and over 13,000 pictures. Bring your magnifying glass!

The back section is the authors playground for providing informative articles on the world of Star Wars and it is an area of the guide that is changed. I'm not going to give away the topics but they are always informative and often a little off the normal beaten path because of the authors slant as a super collector.

Bottom line - There is no question that if you collect or sell Star Wars items you simply have to own this guide. It's certainly the biggest and arguably the best.

Title: Coins (1801-1900, 1901-2000 & 2001 to date), Standard Catalog(s) of World [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

Made sense to review all three volumes from this author since, together, they provide the complete state of the World Coin market. Also, together, they serve as a perfect footstool, just the right height!

I have to admit with the last guide in particular and the other coin guides in general, that I have a new born interest in them. Seems our estate business had taken on an estate that had lots of nice items but it was the large concentration of, you guessed it, investment coins from all over the world. Having the users perspective even more now than I usually try and apply, I can tell the whole story.

Ok, coins are one of my weaknesses so I had little more to go on with some of the coins than the basic markings and dates. When I jumped into really finding the guides values for some of the coins I was struck with what a monumental task it was to organize all of the areas of the world and various coins produced by them into an easy to use guide. Even with my relative lack of background in coins, I was able to quickly catch on to the organization under the Countries I was researching.

Once you find the coin your looking for you'll find not only the details of the coin but usually a full size picture to make sure you've got the right coin. Values are applied over 5 accepted coins grades when applicable and the text includes dating and image information for both sides of the coin.

Bottom line - These guides are of the type that I would be preaching to the choir saying that serious coin collectors and dealers should own them, they already do.

With the value of many of these world coins being surprisingly high, these guides are a worthwhile investment even if your just dabbling.

Title: Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments, Warman's Companion to [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

In an age where every manufacture is jumping on the "collectible" bandwagon without much of a collectible value future, Hallmark simply produced their ornaments along with their card line and let the public decide and they did so well before most other collectible lines.

Since the early 1970's when Hallmark first released their Keepsake ornaments, the collectors recognized their potential as both collectibles and items to be passed down in the family. Even many who simply bought them as nice ornaments soon found themselves hooked as Hallmark released more and more.

These ornaments run the gamut of themes and there is something for almost everyone including some of their most popular lines related to Television and Cartoons. Over 6,000 ornaments are covered in this compact guide along with their original release price and year plus the value for mint in box examples today. Almost 600 color pictures will give a new collector a robust overview of Hallmarks long running lines from just plain cute pieces to Pop culture representations.

Bottom line - With affordable entry prices and still reasonable secondary market values, Hallmark is a great collectible for all levels of collectors, even kids. Compact and near complete, you'll find this guide a helpful one.

Title: Depression Glass, Warman's Companion to [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

Arguably one of the core Antique items collected today, Depression glass continues its popular run. Large numbers of patterns, colors and levels of rarity make a guide a necessity.

Organized by pattern, each pattern includes the manufacturing company information and includes years of production (often broken down by color), item type, color and value. Close up ink drawings of each pattern accompany a number of color pictures, often including any color variations within the pattern. The front section also provides a multiple page thumbnail picture guide of the known patterns produced.

With popularity and value often times come reproductions produced to dupe the uneducated (despite what some companies may tell you about their pieces) and the front section of the guide provides some brief information on how to identify the fakes from the real things.

Bottom line - Krause is often times its only competition and that's the case with this guide and the field guide on the same subject. Warman produced them both so the choice is yours and will likely come down to personal preferences since both guides are compact and complete enough to have in the field where they are really needed.

Title: Fenton Glass, Warman's Companion to [picture of collectibles price guide]

It's hard to tell what Fenton is best known for, the originators of what we know as "Carnival" glass, their simple but functional household serving pieces or their distinct Hobnail patterned glass. What's not hard to tell is that you'll need a guide to make your decision on what to invest in.

In production since the early 1900's with so many changes along the way the guide is organized by date. Each section includes numerous color pictures (totaling over 700) along with descriptive pattern text, sizing and dating. Brief history text is provided as an introduction to each section along with more detailed information within each section on many of the individual lines. Values are quoted and based on the consensus of more than a dozen experienced Fenton dealers and collectors.

Bottom line - Your decision on what Fenton pieces to collect is a personal one but, regardless of the decision, you'll need a guide. Handy and with a large scope of coverage, this guide has a place both in your glove compartment as well as on your reference library shelves.

Title: Jewelry, Secrets to Collecting [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

Though you will find values in this guide, they are provided more as frames of reference for the various eras, materials and styles.

The author starts with the basics, where to get your jewelry. Covering all the venues along with pricing, tactics for buying and even some suggestions of places/sites to go to/take a look at. From there you'll be instructed on how to equip yourself in the field along with instructions on buying right including misconceptions and helpful hints.

The bulk of the guide delves into the various period and accompanying styles. The influences of the day along with commonly used settings and stones accompany pictured examples.

The last section of the guide goes into great detail regarding the companies, methodology and material used.

Title: Hot Wheels Variations, The Ultimate Guide [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

Hot Wheels may be hotter than ever and following suit with many toy manufactures, Hot Wheels has cleverly produced many variations of their more recent vehicles. Of course they have always produced with different color variations but it has gone well beyond that and even experience collectors with huge collections can easily miss one or more variations.

Organized by year and then model number, the guide covers models from 1989 to 2005 and includes almost 4,000 cars. The layout is a checklist style one with lengthily descriptive text, model number, name and value. A small camera icon in each listing lets you know that a picture of that car is among the over 2,000 color photos included.

Bottom line - The difference between the "regular" issue and one of the often numerous variations of a particular Hot Wheels car can be significant. It is common for the difference to be 8 to 15 times the base level and even much more in some instances. With so many cars and so many variations, speculation just doesn't cut it so if you collect "modern" Hot Wheels, this guide is a necessity.

Title: Records, Goldmine Price Guide to 45 RPM [picture of collectibles price guide]
Click for larger picture

One of the collections that I've finally come to terms with and I'm ready to sell is my 45's and record albums. It may be too late, I have thousands of records. The only place I've seen more is in Goldmine's guides and this one makes me feel like I was actually controlled in my buying given the 80,000+ 45's covered.

Now if they only release the large print version!

You need to know little more than the label, artist and title of your holdings to properly evaluate it once you review the various breakdowns of value (i.e. Very Good, Good) and their percentage of noted Near Mint value.

Large classic cover shots are inserted here and there to keep the memories fresh including a glossy color page center insert with special featured covers including Elvis and celebrity vocalists.

Bottom line - It's hard to argue with a name like Goldmine when it comes to records. There is little doubt that you'll find your vinyl gem in this jam packed guide.
