| Title: 50's Popular Fashions (Roseann Ettinger) | Click for larger picture |
Schiffer Publishing is well known for it's beautiful book production and this book doesn't disappoint.
Every page is mostly filled with either full color crisp photographs of individual examples of 1950's clothing or catalog pages from the era. With the current boom in both vintage clothing sales as well as the popularity of retro design among many of the top designers it's surprising that there is such a lack of quality guides for the novice dealer or aficionado.
Thankfully, Schiffer and Roseann Ettinger have put together a nice overview of 50's fashions including Men's, Women's and even children's clothing (a virtually untapped market as of yet!).
Descriptions are brief and to the point highlighting all of the pertinent information, when available, such as label and materials.
The price guide is located at the back of the book and though it does provide a range of value it is really only wide enough to allow for condition rather than skating the issue of the authors assessment of market value. As of this writing, the prices for some of the categories are slightly outdated but overall the prices do give a good general value.
Bottom line - This book is one of the must have guides for any vintage clothing dealer or fan..

Title: Official Hake's Price Guide to Character Toys (Ted Hake) ![]()

Click for larger picture
Ted Hake has long been recognized as a pioneer in the Collectibles game and, lucky for us, he's willing to share his knowledge.
You simply can't beat the price per pound of this huge book that is just chock full of pictures and information from the 1800's to present day. The title just doesn't do it justice as the book includes toys, premiums, one of a kind items, promotional material, etc..
If your in the collectibles business this book is one of the must have guides. Without this guide your bound to get burned which is ok if you just love to have one of those "boy I wish I...." kind of stories for your customers.
The book is well laid out with section headings at the top of every page plus a robust index for quick character reference. Prices are, for the most part, hard to question since Ted continues to be heavily involved in both sales and auctions and his historical price data must be volumous.
Bottom line - Don't let the price scare you. When you see the size of this book you'll realize that it is a bargain. To date each edition has been an improvement on the last and always includes lots and lots of new items.

Title: Toys & Prices (Toy Shop) ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Krause Publications is a giant in the Antiques and Collectibles publishing game printing not only price guides but many trade publications as well. In this case, "Toy Shop" is the magazine/newspaper that gives Toys & Prices its start.
This large book continues to evolve and grow including not only more pages but always some category changes to reflect the current popular markets. Values are updated with each edition and they boast over 30,000 toys in this current volume ranging from 1843 to 2001. Values are from retail ads from their "Toy Shop" magazine and therefore should be taken with a grain of salt. Remember that just because something is market or advertised for a price does not mean that that is necessarily the true retail value. It is important to note that this can go in both directions with regards to price. Values are broken down into three columns of value based on condition; Good, Excellent and Mint in Box.
Bottom line - This book is a must have guide for every level of collector and collectibles dealer.

Title: Official Price Guide to Vintage Fashion and Fabrics (Pamela Smith) ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
With such a lack of reference and price materials on Vintage Clothing I always look forward to new publications on the subject. This book is , for the most part, a welcome edition to a collectors library but misses somewhat as a truly useful dealers tool.
The book really highlights the current boom in the Vintage Clothing market with descriptions and prices from shops, Internet dealers, show dealers as well as private collectors. Contributors are noted under the items description and with many web sites noted both here and compiled at the back of the book it transcends being just a price guide to a resource guide as well. This is especially true when combined with a listing of museums, newsletters, conservator services and a brief glossary of terms.
The book has a lot of information but future editions would benefit from the inclusion of more pictures. By their very nature (internal dealer databases in some cases) the descriptions sometimes lack enough information to get a proper idea of the garment referenced. Prices are a mixed bag given the mirade of sources so pricing in your area or market may be a little tricky.
Bottom line - I'm holding off putting this one on my must have list for vintage clothing dealers but it is a handy reference tool never the less and if your funds are not limited then grab it. Given the handful of reference material currently available it is a welcome addition. Possibly it's strongest value is showing not only the dealers involved but the sheer diversity of clothing available as the author runs the gamut from Couture to casual.

Title: Bowling Shirts (Joe Tonelli & Marc Luers) ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Aaaah, Schiffer. If you love to simply gaze at your Vintage Clothing or Collectibles in all their blazing, full color, glory then Schiffer is the publisher for you.
Bowling shirts is one of those guides that you simply have to buy when it is published/available since you probably wont get a second chance. 160 pages of beautiful shirts often with the page devoted entirely to one shirt showing all the nuances that make for a shirt that stands above most others.
The values listed fall generally into just a few rough ranges of value and once you get the idea of what makes one shirt better than another it has little value as a true price guide. It's true value is that of a retrospective of shirts that are becoming increasingly hard to find and might not be seen otherwise.
Bottom line - If your an across the board Vintage Clothing collector than this book should be in your library. As Vintage clothing becomes more and more the norm with more and more people the clothing will literally fall of the hanger eventually and books such as this may be on of the few reminders of classic clothing. Buy this one for the coffee table rather than for pricing.

Title: Schroeder's Antiques Price Guide ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Schroeder's puts out simply the best bang for your buck when it comes to top level guides, particularly their Antiques guide.
This large format book is chock full of categories, each of which has an advisor. Since advisors usually specialize in their field you get fairly realistic pricing for most categories. This pricing, however, may be effected by the venue at which it is sold since advisors usually have specialized sources for purchasing and selling (e.g.. a club/show specifically involving only this Antique category). As with most similar guides it relies mostly on descriptive text with additional items valued with small pictures. Unfortunately, a yearly guide of this magnitude simply cannot support the inclusion of large number of pictures so it is not a drawback. Descriptions on the whole are enough for comparisons and help with pricing.
Bottom line - I never miss a volume of this guide. Sometimes I don't even get much time to look at it but it always pays off even with one use to look up an obscure item. It easily makes my must have book list for Antique dealers and it's my number one recommendation for novices to the Antiques game.

Title: Rhythm & Blues Records, Goldmine Standard catalog of ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
It's always amazing to me the sheer number of records that have been produced throughout the years. If your just interested in a top level overview of values than a standard "record" guide might suffice. However, if you want to really venture into the many styles, and values, of records than you simply have to buy specialized guides. Specialized guides offer the added benefit of pricing from within the collecting group per. se. which tends to be higher than, for example, the average "record" collector.
These points become obvious when you see the sheer size, almost 500 large format pages!, of this price guide for Rhythm & Blues records with many listings that can't be found in any other guide on the market. As this is the first such guide in over 20 years it is a welcome sight for many in the business and collecting world alike.
Goldmine is well known for their trade magazine about records and they are an obvious choice for undertaking the project. Tim Neely, research director for Goldmine, has put together listings for over 40,000 records that include three price points starting at "very good" quality all the way up to "near mint" for 45, 78, 33 1/3 rpm plus promotional records. Tim takes great pains to give a detailed definition not only for these three grading criteria but also the other criteria down to "fair" and up to "mint". However, as he notes, the primary value stops at the "very good" level dropping dramatically from there while mint copies are very much a rarity so these three criteria will fit the majority of finds and a little math will help to figure the values for the few remaining grades. Since evaluation criteria differ not only from book to book but also from collector to collector, it is of the utmost importance that these details are highlighted and Tim should be applauded for his thoroughness.
The applause doesn't stop there. This book is actually a page turner that will be welcome on your coffee table. Between the curiosity of the value of your holdings and the interspersed highlighted album covers and full color center section you just can't stop yourself from thumbing through. Add to that the extensive introductions not only to the the history of R&B but also to the business/hobby of record collecting including an explanation of how the prices were derived and how they fit into the real world (another point that should always be highlighted in any decent price guide) and you have a great gude.
Bottom line - this is the kind of book that usually more than pays for itself when you nail down the retail prices of your albums. If your just curious or especially if your thinking about liquidating your R&B collection this book is a must.
I've said it before and I'll probably say it every time the situation arises: many specialized price guides are never duplicated again. Though I don't think this will necessarily be the case since Goldmine undertook it, you can see from the passage of time since any attempt was made to put together a similar book that it is altogether possible that this may be your only chance to have a valuable reference book in your library.

Title: Dolls and Values Blue Book ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
This best selling, tightly packed, volume gives a concise overview of both "Antique" and "Modern" dolls of all types.
Probably one of the biggest problems to the novice doll collector or general collector is that of identifying the dolls themselves. Often times marks on some of these dolls are lacking enough information to properly evaluate them. Even with detailed and clear markings you would be hard pressed to find another guide that would list many of these dolls since most general Antique or Collectible guides limit themselves to either the top categories of dolls or the "hot" doll(s) at the time of publishing. Again, this is the problem with limiting yourself to overview guides and if you want to become serious in the doll collecting game or even if you just want top dollar for the occasionally find then you need the Blue Book.
The Blue Book not only has detailed descriptions of the materials used for the various dolls along with prices but also illustrated examples of manufacturer and/or mold marks. With the addition of over 560 full color pictures the guide is an easy to use tool. Additionally, I like the mold mark section that has been added at the back which narrows the identification of your doll to manufactures who have used that mold number. These features for the novice are indispensable and the expert expects nothing less.
Price ranges are based on retail asking prices found in a myriad of venues including retail shops, auctions, etc.. They don't skirt the issue of proper value ranges either with each doll description noting the condition used for the range which is narrow enough to not leave you guessing. Once again, should the doll come in a box (if applicable) or be in lesser condition than noted one could easily infer a value.
Still, with the sheer number, sizes, etc. of dolls out there even the Blue Book can't be expected to list all of the variations and manufacturers. Previous volumes tend to show pictures of different dolls so this is definitely the type of guide that you buy every year if your serious. In fact, Hobby House generally has a few past editions available though they are in limited supplies and go quickly. With a little fast work you could start off with a good base doll library. The first 10 editions are already out of print but those too can be found, for a premium, at shows or resale shop.
Bottom line - With 15 editions to hash out any minor or potential problems I am hard pressed to find even slight negative points (believe me, I always try!) with this guide. It has been referred to as the "bible" of doll collecting and I have not seen another guide that highlights so many doll types to dispute that. They take great pains to give the essential details on the prices noted including some background on the variables that contribute to the value of a doll and determination of value. Admittedly I'm not an expert on dolls but my experience in a number of these doll types leads me to believe that their pricing is well founded overall and trust worthy and this guide is a useful tool for experts and novices alike.

Title: In search of Teddy (Bear) ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
No prices, no reference material, just sheer overindulgence into the world of the lovable Teddy Bear who celebrated his 100th anniversary in 2002.
This is just the type of book that super collectors really love to get there hands on. Loaded with pictures of bears you'll wish you had and maybe a few of the friends you already own.
Obviously a labor of love, this book consists of short stories written by the author and long time owner of a Teddy bear store. Every story has one thing in common, Teddy Bears.
The stories recount encounters with people in her store, each with a unique Teddy story. Accompanying the stories are vintage photos of the people in the stories, usually with their Teddy Bear. There are additional photos of many Teddy Bears (including a couple that cost over 6 figures!) and the brief history of Teddy.
Bottom line - it's said that over 90% of Americans grew up with a Teddy Bear so it's not surprising that most would find these short stories heart warming. Light a fire, make some hot chocolate for you and Teddy and enjoy these touching vignettes.

Title: So Crazy Japanese Toys ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
At the risk of showing my age, some of my fondest T.V. moments (and there are quite a few!) are of watching some after school greats; Speed Racer, Kimba the White Lion, Marine Boy and probably most of all Ultraman.
I'm still a nut for Ultraman and similar Japanese live action and animated classics so much so that I begged a friend of mine upon her recent visit to Japan to score some toys for me, which she graciously did. My experience has shown that I am far from unique in my love to Japanese superheros and monsters and this book certainly lends credence to that belief.
No wasted text here, most of the heavy glossy pages are full of slick full color close-up photos of fantastic live action toys or scenes from Japanese T.V. shows spanning from the 50's to present day. For the American market, this may be the only opportunity you have to even catch a glimpse of these campy monster and hero figures.
The back pages provide name identification and manufacturer information for the illustrated figures which is worth the price alone. I have a handful of figures from Japan simply because they are super cool looking but I've never known the names and/or history of the figures and I expect I'm not the only one.
Bottom line - This book reminds me very much of the very sought after and out of print Japanese museum robot books that sell for a pretty penny, if you can find them! Informative yes but the biggest draw is the beautifully shot photographs. This book is easily categorized as an art book. Set it out anywhere in your house and I guarantee visitors will be powerless to not pick it up. Be careful though, tell them they have to get their own copy!

Title: Toys & Prices (Toy Shop) ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
My hands are sweating slightly as I open the cover of the latest Toys & Prices guide. The cover notation, "all new format", frightens me...I liked the old format and fear change. Ok, onward with an open mind. Page after page I find myself whispering quietly the often overheard (or is it "heard over and over") phrase from our shop; "Hey, I had one of those!".
Toys and Prices has been the "go to" book for general toy collecting for a number of years and is on my must have guide list for every level of general collector as well as my collectibles dealer must have list where it will remain for yet another year.
The format change for this tenth anniversary issue, fortunately, isn't drastic and certainly looks better than the old format. In addition to the format change, the editors of Toy Shop have included more photos than previous volumes and an additional slick page color section in the center. The number of toys featured, appears to have dropped from "over 30000" down to 25,000. Still, that's a lot of toys! Guess they had to make room for the additional 4000 pictures.
I checked two particular categories, games and lunch boxes, that I always felt "Toys & Prices" handled better than most in terms of completeness and relative values. It first appeared that the new edition shortened these two categories but the format is a little deceptive and, to my surprise, it appears that both categories are not only easier to read now but also include more items than the 9th edition! So much for trying to find something negative about this great guide. By the way, my very rough counts on these categories show that there are well over 1000 lunch boxes listed and almost 4000 games.
Toy Shop appears to have changed how the prices in their guide are derived. Previous editions noted that prices were directly from ads in their "Toy Shop" magazine. This type of pricing has a serious potential pitfall in that the fact that something is marketed or advertised for a certain price does not mean that that is necessarily the true retail value. Additionally, many ads in Toy Shop may be from dabblers in the market versus full time dealers who should tend to have a better knowledge base as it relates to pricing.
Toys and Prices now notes that "various collectors, dealers and in-house experts compare prices on items, check out the shows, talk to contributors and finally settle on an average." This sounds like a better methodology since it appears that real market sales (through dealers and experts hopefully) play more into determining the three noted price points from excellent to near mint and finally to mint in package. I would need a little more detail to truly bless this methodology but suffice to say that it is almost certainly and improvement and probably the only viable methodology with a guide of this size and scope.
Due to the sheer size it is difficult to give my opinion of pricing as it relates to the real world but my past experiences with this guide along with quite a few random checks indicates to me not only that the pricing is sound but that strides have been made (probably due to the new pricing methodology) to update some previous seriously undervalued areas.
Bottom line - to be fair I compared the old format from the last edition side by side with this one and I have to say that the new format not only looks better but is probably easier to use. I didn't think it was possible to improve on this critical guide but it looks like they have succeeded.
As with a few other guides of this type, past editions are always valuable. It appears that most/all of the "lost" 5,000 items are due to the omission of a few categories from the previous edition; Banks, Coloring Books, Guns, Rock and Roll, Space/Science Fiction (Star Wars is still included), a few Vehicle manufactures, Weebles and Western Toys. Pez dispensers make a return appearance for this edition. Some of these category items are likely covered in other sections (T.V. coloring books are, for example, under "Character Toys" headings) but it illustrates that a long running library of these editions is indeed helpful. Don't forget that I told you so when I revisit "Toys and Prices" next edition that will likely have a similar shuffling of categories
This is a necessary guide for anyone dealing with toys. With over 800 pages, this is another of those guides that's just great to leaf through.

Title: Sand Pail Encyclopedia, a complete value guide for Tin-litho Sand Toys ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
When you bring your kids to the beach now you probably hand them a mass produced plastic solid color bucket and maybe a matching shovel if they're lucky. Certainly they have fun but there was a time when more attention was paid to a day at the beach.
This becomes so much more clear when you leaf through this oversized paperback with over 300 items, all with full color pictures, exclusively manufactured for days at the beach. We take for granted that we will visit the beach every so often but in the past this excursion was much more of an event and one which involved the whole family.
The authors provide a fairly lengthily history of the evolution of the sand pail from the brief mention of early 1800's wooden pails to the creation of tin pails starting sometime in the 1850's. Pail production continued in earnest through the 1960's with many candy manufacturers utilizing pails as a source of marketing for their candy in the latter decades creating many varieties of pails. Also included are the major manufactures of the toys and a brief history of their companies. In short, in a matter of pages you'll know as much about sand pails of the past as the authors do.
The vast collections is, for the most part, from the holdings of the authors' collection and they certainly rate as "super" collectors. Each picture is accompanied by a very complete description that includes it's dimensions, manufacturer when known, approximation of year/decade when it was made and written description of the pictured lithograph on the pail. The book includes not only traditional sand pails but also shovels, watering cans and other sand action toys. It is a beautiful presentation.
Pricing was derived through the authors' experiences with live auctions, shows and the like with a noted heavy reliance on Ebay results over a three year period. Though the Ebay note gives me some pause they note that they have taken the fact that retail prices are higher than Ebay (as they should be, it is an auction despite being an electronic one and prices usually average 50% of retail) into their calculations of "value".
In fact if anything my review of their noted prices appear to be on the high side versus what you would expect from heavy reliance on live/electronic auction results. Prices at auction and realized prices at shows or in shops are apples and oranges, the noted prices appear to be top retail prices that you would expect to pay in, for example, an Antique or Collectibles shop. By the way, there is nothing wrong with any of this but it is important to be aware of such things when utilizing price guides and it's my job to point it out so you can use guides properly. Price guides have a big role to play in the market but are often misused.
Bottom line - I'm impressed. Not only by the sheer size of their collection but also with their attention to detail in both the pictures and accompanying text. If there is a better book chronicling the history of sand toys then I'm not aware of it. Use a grain of salt with regard to prices noted on some items.

Title: Marilyn Monroe Cover to Cover ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Few stars warrant there own collectible category. There's Elvis, Shirley Temple and, of course, Marilyn Monroe. That's about it! Sure, other star related items are collected but it is the sheer volume of collectibles along with the longevity of the collector base that set these few stars above all the others.
It is the sheer number of items available that really hits home when you realize that this book is dedicated only to Marilyn magazines, photo books and magazine covers and easily fills the 176 oversized pages (and it's likely no where near a complete listing at that!). Fans of Marilyn Monroe span the generations and it is one of those collectible categories that does not suffer from the passing of time and the passing of "original" collectors. If anything the popularity of Monroe collectibles is at an all time high.
In relative terms, collecting Monroe ephemera is an inexpensive way for the novice collector to get started with many examples selling for $20-$50. The great graphic appeal and displayabilty are also a plus so with a little cash and patience a nice backdrop for a growing collection can be put together. Of course quality paper collectibles because of their fragile nature can be not only quite rare but also quite costly so you need guidance.
New collectors will often pass up these type of collectibles once they go above a certain price point and they may be making one of those mistakes that all collectors make at one time or another, and regret later. This guide does a good job of highlighting the relative values of the magazines and covers and will serve as a useful tool not only to the novice just entering the market but also to experienced collectors since there are so many choices to be had.
Condition of paper collectibles is of the utmost importance and relates directly to the price of such items. The author goes into good detail outlining his grading scale from poor to mint with the noted prices in the book being held between very good and near mint condition. The reason for leaving out the grading categories below very good is due to the belief held by some collectors that with paper collectibles very good condition is the lowest acceptable grade.
As an aside for collectors, I happen to disagree somewhat and I don't believe it as cut and dry as that . Rarity and selling price need to be considered. Many collectors pass on all but the highest grades which is fine with all things (availability, scarcity, price) being equal but that's not usually the reality. I feel this is more applicable to paper items than other subcategories since even very good condition for some items may not exist. If you too believe as I do then this guide again shows its usefullness by highlighting collecting gems.
The book goes on to illustrate the many magazines, etc. with over 300 full color pictures along with what are often lengthily descriptions that more often than not include quotes from Marilyn made during interviews at the time of release of the item. If Marilyn isn't quoted there are also historical notes and/or quotes from co-stars or friend on Marilyn. This added text makes this price guide more than just a guide but an informative historical reference of the life of the legend.
Bottom line - Is there anyone who doesn't have soft spot for Marilyn in their hearts? If your collect Monroe memorabilia or Pin-up stuff this book will prove to be invaluable in sorting out the run of the mill from the paper holy grails. Hats off too the the inclusion of historical references and quotes which are always a plus with price guides that can often be flat reference material.

Title: Shirley Temple Collectibles Vol. II , Identification and Price Guide to ![]()

Click for larger picture
Though I may be showing my age, I remember many a Sunday morning watching classic Shirley Temple movies (on T.V. folks, I'm not THAT old!). Shirley sparked an almost immediate popularity when she first appeared in what were otherwise desperate times, the beginning of the 1930's. The Depression AND World War II, it's no wonder that the escapism of the always perky Shirley caught on like a wildfire that has grown exponentially and includes more collectibles than you can probably imagine. She is truly one of the few personality collectible giants that transcend the normal generational following.
It's no wonder that at least two volumes, this being the second, can be filled with Temple memorabilia and collectibles. This continuation from volume one contains and impressive collection spanning all types of Shirley temple collectibles including; dolls, sheet music, a vast selection of paper items, foreign items and autographs. That's not even the full list! Every item is accompanied by full color pictures with 300 in total along with descriptive text that goes well beyond the often overused single line entries.
Pricing collectibles is a tricky game and many authors worry about pigeon holing their price references. However, all of us must always keep in mind that price guides are written as guides and should always be combined with market realities, regional pricing, intense competition and resulting high bids at auction for certain items, and many other variables so I have always felt that if an author undertakes the writing of a guide they should strive to pass along the best pricing information possible. So long as the time is taken to document how the prices were reached and what condition(s) the prices encompass, few can complain. The only exception would be an author who is trying to influence/control a certain market and produces prices (high if they have a large collection to sell, low if they want to corner the market) that are clearly out of line to many other experienced experts and dealers.
This book falls into a category of price guides that I categorize as a "price guide with ranges". This type of price guide either purposefully or by omission (as in this case) has to some extent or all together skated the issue of prices in the current market. In this case, many, but not all, price references are slightly vague and a good deal of initial prices are followed by "and up". Unfortunately the author neglects to mention the starting point for the first price reference (e.g. good condition, etc.). These two factors devalue the use of the price guide if the reader lacks knowledge of the market for, in this case, Shirley Temple items.
Bottom line - despite the price listing drawbacks this book does a great job, along with its volume one companion, of highlighting an immense selection, in diverse categories, of some of the Shirley Temple items available. Along with some personal experience in the Shirley Temple market the new collector should be able to better utilize price references. I'm certain that a number of other volumes could easily be produced despite the author's already exhaustive work.
Though I don't mention it in all cases I like to bring this up from time to time as it is a good lesson to learn when building a good reference library: Many guides are produced at times when the subject matter is heating up or already hot in the Collectibles or Antique markets and, more often than not, are never redone or re-released. I believe that that might very well be the case with this particular guide. Because of that, Temple enthusiasts should strike while the iron is hot to add this book to their library.

Title: Postage Stamps, 2003 Catalogue of errors on U.S. ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
I have to say that I have boxes of old stamps and full stamp albums. I've held on to them for many years realizing that though most of them are probably all but worthless there are sales results that yield many thousands of dollars. I have just never had the time or resources to properly sift through them.
Some of the massive sales results are simply for very old and rare stamps but just as many are for error printings that result from imperforates (lack of die cuts between stamps), color omissions, reverse inscriptions ,etc..
This book takes a lot of the guess work out of sorting your collection out. Sections are organized by error type (e.g. Imperforate errors). If your new to the stamp world, like me, you'll have to digest a significant amount of jargon to properly read the guide as most listings use a series of abbreviations that are detailed in the opening section of the book. Though most entries are brief and include a description, picture and pricing, many entries go further to provide more details on number of stamps made, recent auction results, history of the error and more.
Pricing and condition details are well noted along with details for each section of the descriptions for individual stamps.
Bottom line - if your like me and have books and or boxes of inherited stamps lying around while you figure out what to do with them then this guide is a necessity. This type of collecting area is where phenomenal finds are often made by knowledgeable collectors at flea markets or even yard sales simply due to the seller's lack of knowledge or not knowing how to acquire the knowledge.
This is an old school price guide in the true sense. It may sit in your library unused for some time but when you need it it goes back on the shelf completely dog eared and creased from use. I expect that I don't have to preach to true stamp collector's who no doubt already own the current volume.

Title: Glass A to Z ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Truth be known, Glass is one of those categories that I shy away from as a dealer. As you can imagine, it is a huge and core category in the business and I simply never seem to find the time to gather enough expertise to be dangerous in the marketplace. Not only do you have to know manufacturers, markings, patterns and the like but terminology can also be a sticking point, particularly with sales done through the mail or over the Internet.
"Glass A to Z" certainly scratches the last itch though it makes me even more aware of how little I truly know. This is a dictionary in the true sense of the word but it goes further and defines not only the terminology of glass makers but also history of the companies themselves along with patterns, background of well known artisans and definitions of types of items that are made (e.g. flagon.....see!, you'll have to look it up!). All entries are quite lengthily and complete and include a smattering of pictures.
Bottom line - Certainly this book is a necessity for serious glass collectors and dealers. It is most suitable for those who already know something about glass as it is essentially a reverse lookup reference guide. Knowing the terminology, manufacturer, etc. leads you to the section on that term, etc..
However, this is not to say that it is strictly for the experts. A good deal can be learned by literally reading this book from cover to cover. Used in conjunction with other books on glass and glass markings even a beginner will learn quite a few things. In my relatively brief reading that included some skimming, I quickly picked up a few definitions that have alluded me for a number of years.
If your into glass in a big way now or if you have plans to get into the field this book will prove a useful reference tool, if not immediately then certainly later as you knowledge base grows.

Title: Chocolate molds with Values, Collector's guide to Antique ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Chocolate has gone the way of so many mass produced items these days. If you want a good looking piece of chocolate the best you'll probably do is a swanky over produced high end piece with maybe a colored swirl on the top.
There was a day, however, in which chocolate came in all sorts of forms from animals to holiday related figures and this guide does a great job at showing you a large selection of the Antique molds on the market today.
The pages are largely taken up by multiple full color close-up photos of the molds and are accompanied by manufacturer (when known or marked), decade made, dimensions and values (which they note are retail values). All together, there are over 300 pictures and the molds run the gamut from holiday representations (e.g. Santa, jack-o'-lantern), animals, Teddy Bears to people. The book goes further to provide a brief history of chocolate making and molds plus a few collector tips for buying and taking care of your collection.
Bottom line - Since the values for most (careful, there are exceptions!) molds fall into just a handful of price points ($75, $95, $125...), this guide is useful for the collector in sorting out the various strata of molds. Even a brief reading will prepare you for shopping with a good base knowledge of values.

Title: Boys' Series books, all about collecting ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Harry Potter books seem laughable when compared to some of the great series book writers of the past. Who hasn't owed at least one Tom Swift or Hardy Boys book? Think those were the only boys' series books made?, think again.
The author clearly knows his stuff and there is a good deal of information and history on boys' series books which go well beyond the first books that pop into your head. Each section starts with a well written history of both the series and the author and contains a break down of the different volumes and formats for each volume printing along with lots of color pictures. The book goes further to touch on the preservation and cleaning of books with some techniques that can easily be done at home. As many people further damage books with guesses as to how to clean them and take off secondary price marks this is a real plus.
Probably the best feature is the breakdown of the different formats of some of the series. Often both boys' and girls' series books and the different printings vary only by the colors of their interior "end papers" inside the covers. As prices can differ significantly between an original printing and later reprints this information is critical and it is the first time I have seen it committed to print.
All the beautiful work that went into this book is shadowed by the lack of useful pricing. Most prices have huge ranges that are generally not very useful to the readers in determining prices. Though the author does go into brief detail with regards to the price ranges I think a little more information would certainly make what is already a very complete and nice to look at guide into a truly useful tool. Common ranges in this volume span from $4 to $45 and even from $10 to $200. The range is for books from "fine" condition to excellent with dust jacket. Though these and the other acceptable condition statements are elaborated on there is a lack of information on how to derive other price points. This is important when dealing with paper items and particularly with books as condition is everything and, in my experience, book collectors can be quite picky. With such a complete listing of boys' series books it would have been nice to include at least the major variables that make up the pricing along with the otherwise detailed definitions of various grades (condition statements) of books.
Bottom line - I'm hard pressed to think of another detailed book in existence for boys' books and if you want a well put together history of boys' series books along with tons of color pictures, breakdown of all volumes and formats then this book is a welcome addition to your library. If you need a price guide for you collection in the interest of nailing down values you may have to do some work yourself to determine where you books fit into the often vague price ranges.

Title: Bottles, Antique Trader's Identification and Price Guide ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
I can't tell you how many poor shlubs I've encountered at appraisal fairs and the like with an armload of old bottles for appraisal. I have to be the bearer of bad news in most cases and tell them their bottles are worth only a few bucks and that's if they can find a buyer, which is doubtful.
I usually caveat the low appraisal by passing along the fact that there are indeed many bottles with significant value and that they shouldn't give up collecting. It's not surprising that I encounter so many people with bottles and little or no idea of value, it's a popular collecting field and there are massive amounts of bottles out there.
This is one of two books on the subject that I'm familiar with and both make good attempts at covering a wide range of bottles including figural decanters and Avon. Though it's impossible to have a complete listing due to sheer numbers, this guide does a good job at touching many bases to give you a good idea of values among the different types of bottles. Listings are broken down by Pre and Post 1900 then further broken down into types of bottles or manufacturers in the case of Avon and whiskey decanters.
For the beginner, and others too, this book is a nice start with the first 50 pages devoted to everything from history and origin of bottles to detailed terminology and where to find old bottles. This section is almost a book unto itself and worth reading.
Bottom line-this book is very complete in it's background information and terminology in the bottle collecting world (e.g. bottle lips, seams, etc.). In fact, it is almost worth the price for this section alone.
It does have quite a few pictures but could do with a few more as some description, though they have as much information as possible, may lead to misidentification. This is not a unique problem and because of the subject matter of this type of guide there will be some judgment calls on the collector's part unless every item is pictured. This is true with other bottle guides as well. Because of this common problem I always suggest that bottle collectors pick up any and all guides available to help determine value.

Title: Madame Alexander Dolls Collector's price guide ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
If you collect dolls, and frankly even if you don't, you know the name Madame Alexander. Since the 1920's Madame Alexander has produced highly detailed and superb quality collector dolls. With thousand of different dolls this is certainly a specialized doll collecting category unto itself and, therefore, a separate price guide becomes necessary.
As I've mentioned, one of the difficulties in producing a guide for such a wide ranging category is capturing the majority of items within the category while, at the same time, providing enough detail and information to make any of the listings useful to the various levels of collectors and dealers. Pictures are one solution but here too you are limited somewhat by the size of the publication. This guide does provide a normal amount of pictures but not enough to make the guide foolproof for identifying and valuing dolls.
Though the author acknowledges the many pitfalls in determining prices in this changing market he never indicates what condition he has assumed for the single price reference for the dolls listed. This is an oversight that may trip up the novice picking up this volume for the first time.
Having said all of the above, let me again acknowledge the difficulty in producing such a guide. Basically you need to either write a humongous volume or shoot for trying to achieve usability with one level (novice to expert) of the collecting audience. I believe the author has directed this guide at the more experienced levels where it becomes a useful guide.
Bottom line-experienced collectors will benefit most from the detailed listings in this guide. The breakdowns within the dolls are very thorough and once the doll is determined the author doesn't shy away from placing some pretty exacting values on the dolls. Collectors will have to make their own assumptions as to the condition quoted. This determination should be easy for an experienced collector who is familiar with the market but will further hamper the usability to the novice.
If your just starting out collecting MA dolls this guide will be of some assistance but don't look for the ability to identify all of your dolls with this guide alone (though you may few other choices). Keeping in mind that you have to start somewhere and if you plan on continuing collecting then this guide will likely come in handy in the near future.

Title: Antiques & Collectibles 2003 Price Guide, Antique Trader ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
General price guides are the heart of any good reference library. Not only do they give you a wide overview of multiple collecting categories but they often times provide a glimpse as to the activity levels in a particular field or new emerging categories.
Antique Trader's guide has long been one of those guides that I not only buy every year but I also collect back volumes for trend analysis. As the publisher of a mostly items for sale and auction notices trade newspaper, they have access and exposure to a wide range of items and categories. Their experience combined with that of the many contributing "experts" in various categories provides a credible base for valuing items.
One of the shining points in this guide is the inclusion of these new collecting categories every year in their effort to track the most current trends in collecting. Sometimes these are often fairly obscure small categories but other times they are right on the money and can serve to get you into collecting the mentioned items before the prices get out of hand.
The guide has a heavy concentration on Furniture, Ceramics and Glass (over 400 pages) which is good for some but not others so it is worth mentioning. Category listings include often lengthily descriptions along with prices which are derived from a number of retail sources though each source is not mentioned. They mention not only the general pitfalls in providing guide prices but also mention the often missed fact that the listed retail prices are not what to expect when selling to dealers.
Bottom line-the bang for the buck with these general guides is hard to beat. If your pocket can bear it you should add this volume to your library.
Though this guide does not currently show up on my must have book list for Antique dealers it could easily be switched with Kovel's price guide and may well do so when I see the latest Kovel's guide. The fact is I think that this guide, Kovel's and, especially, Shroeder's Antique guide are essential to most good reference libraries but my "must have" lists are put together with a budget in mind. Combined these guides provide good top level information on most popular categories.

Title: Crayola Collectibles, A Century of ![]()

From time to time even I am surprised at the existence of a collectible theme. Such is the case with Crayola. Sure, I knew some people had old packs of crayons for their graphic appeal and sheer nostalgia but I had no idea that the Crayola brand was so varied and far reaching.
This book extensively covers the Crayola line that includes the obvious art creation items like crayons and paints but also includes the more recently added watches, clocks, ornaments, and vehicles to name a few. Every item includes a brief description along with a full color picture.
The price guide is organized by category and item description at the back of the book. Prices are not too difficult to find though a page reference would be helpful. Estimated value appears to include all of the condition grades (though this is inferred and the author never specifically says which conditions are included in the price guide) from poor to Mint but the ranges are generally so narrow that there are probably few gray areas.
The book also includes just about everything you would want to know about the company that was started in 1903. Color pictures of the factory in action along with a trivia section (which note the few discontinued colors you don't see anymore) make for interesting reading.
Bottom line - I'm just guessing here but I have to believe that this is the only such guide in existence and, therefore, is a must have for Crayola fans and collectors. I better dig out my 64 crayon set with built in sharpener, it's worth $25-50!

Title: Pez, Collector's Guide to ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Do you have any Pez? It's a question that undoubtedly gets a "no, sorry" answer in our shop. Most of the Pez we get in get sold almost immediately. It's a very popular Collectible.
This is one of the few guides I've run across in quite a while that leaves little to criticize. Perhaps it is because the author is fairly new to the game of collecting and he is yet to be influenced, in any bad ways, by other guides on the market. However, just because he started collecting Pez just about 10 years ago it doesn't mean he can't be counted as an authority and his collection has already been featured in trade publications and museums.
How can you not love Pez after thumbing through this brilliantly full color book with pictures of hundreds of these candy dispensing buddies? The introduction provides a concise and logical description of his pricing and grading methodology.
Each page provides quality color pictures for the dispensers including many of the individual character variations (e.g.. feet/no feet, head material, etc.) along with date(s) of manufacture and short price ranges. Additionally, many listings include further history and interesting factoids.
The guides goes further to include sections on Pez related collectibles such as advertising materials and displays as well as information on conventions and web sites related to Pez collecting.
Bottom line - Pez collecting is a great area of Collectibles for anyone. They're fun, useful (ok, so I like candy!) and generally speaking very inexpensive. Their affordability along with new offerings at kid size prices make them a great start for young collectors.
This book, too, is a great example of a book made for just about everyone and a good learning tool for the budding collector of any age. Chock full with full color pictures, variation explanations and pointers on starting your collection and finding new acquisitions makes this guide hard to knock.

No matter what decade, or century!, you were born in it is likely that you have some fond memories of the decor that surrounded you in you Mother's kitchen.
That memory is where this guide starts and then takes off with wild abandon. If you can't find reference to the machine or utensil of your desire then it probably doesn't exist anymore.
This doorstop weight guide is broken down by use rather than year and includes sections on preparing, measuring, holding and handling, cooking, preserving, furnishings and electric gadgets and appliances. Additionally the guide provides glossaries, both visual and written, and each section has a profuse amount of history and detail. It doesn't stop there. Many sections include large additional note sections, reproduction alerts so you don't get stung and places to turn for additional information, if that's possible.
Pictures include both drawings and pictures (including a small color section) and each item usually includes a very detailed description with closely grouped price ranges. It's difficult for me to get a handle on pricing accuracy due to the sheer size and scope of this guide but the author explains in some detail the price determinations and limitations so I'll take the leap of faith given the expertise involved and longevity of the guide itself.
Bottom line - this is a must have guide for anyone delving into kitchen collectibles. Decorators too are likely to find it to be a very useful reference tool for years to come.
Even without a real interest in kitchen collectibles this guide is a fascinating journey into the history and development of kitchen tools and appliances and well worth the cover price.

If your as out of control a collector as I am you don't have any concerns about how to display your collectibles and antiques in an appealing manner, there's only so many ways you can stack boxes!
If your a little more controlled, and who isn't, this book gives you a peek into 40 Bed and Breakfast Inns that that utilize Antiques and Collectibles to create a warm, inviting atmosphere for their clients. The book includes introductory tips on displaying Collectibles and Antiques along with pictures to show examples of how to show off your finds in your own home.
Each section highlights various Bed and Breakfast stops along with pictures of the items they feature in the homes. The descriptions are fairly complete and include the history of the buildings featured but, given the title, I would have liked to see more pictures for each featured location. The back section includes a directory that includes the featured spots and many more Bed and Breakfast along with their featured Collectible or Antique theme.
Bottom line - the difference between a good and bad display of your collection is a fine point and not all of us have the eye for making winning displays. This book might help to spark ideas and help you develop your eye for display but it is most useful as a guide for unique Bed and Breakfast vacations.

Title: Soda Pop Collectibles Price Guide, Petretti's ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Coke? Pepsi?, maybe even Mountain Dew, if you think competition is tough now you have no idea what Soda carnage remains from the past battles. There have been literally hundreds and maybe even thousands of individual soda brands throughout the years. As important as brand identification is now you can imagine how important it was in years past with such vast competition.
Find it all hard to believe? Petretti will convince you otherwise with the 3rd edition of his great Soda Collectibles book. The book covers all types of Collectibles from the late 1800's until the 1970's when, arguably, better quality Collectibles ceased to be.
Petretti's experience in this market is clear and his pricing methodology is as sound as it gets. Constantly staying on top of the market he loves he is able to factor in not only the area of the country an item is sold in but also the venue (e.g. auction, private sale, etc.). Taking all factors into account certainly makes the workload significant but it pays off big in the form of a reliable value guide.
The book is almost entirely made of of Black and White and color pictures rather than lengthily text which makes for a very complete guide covering too many categories to cover in this brief review. Highlights include signs, clocks, paper Collectibles, bottles and dispensers but believe me that this is just scratching the surface. Each item has a brief description to include date of manufacture and dimensions along with a single value. Again, Petretti really puts it on the line by utilizing all contributing value factors and nailing down a single price but also mentions the contributing variables clearly and leaves further interpretation up to the reader.
Bottom line - the relatively high cover price for this guide is well worth the investment. The fact of the matter is that compared to the data covered in most guide this one probably has three times as much information so the price by itself is very misleading and, again, well worth it.
Complete in scope (sorry Coke fans, there is so much material on Coca-Cola that Petretti has devoted another huge volume to Coke alone!) and well grounded pricing make this a must have book for both Soda and advertising collectors alike.

One thing that I was looking forward to in undertaking this feature was exposure to realms of the collecting world that I had previously not been exposed to. Thanks to Hobby House that is already beginning in a big way. I also wanted to make sure not only that the selections were unbiased but also included not just price guides but also coffee table style books and instructional books such as this one.
This book includes 20 patterns you can make for 15 and 16 inch "fashion dolls". These outfits are gorgeous and your a better person than me if you have the skill and patience to put them together, I'll buy them when your done! O.K., I can't sew but even if you have basic sewing expertise you can use this book as each pattern is rated according to skill level.
The patterns are derived directly from old fashion plates which are illustrated along with the instructions which also include full color photos of dolls wearing the finished fashions. Patterns span from "Classical" (Cleopatra and Marc Antony) to the 1940's with great Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall outfits.
Bottom line - The vast majority of these patterns require only novice or average level sewing skills so most doll fanatics will find plenty to do. If your tired of your no longer hip fashion doll's outfit here's your chance to make it a trend setter.

Title: Farm Implements and Machinery 1630-1930, 300 years of ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Old catalogs often command hundreds of dollars from collectors. The reasons they can get such high prices is clear, they are invaluable and near one of a kind reference material for collectors and dealers alike. Even reprints of old catalogs can sell for coffee table book prices.
"300 years of Farm Implements and Machinery, 1630-1930" provides an opportunity for the collector, dealer or historical buff to not only get dozens of reprints of original catalog listings for these items but also and in-depth history of the development of tools and their uses.
The book reportedly includes over 500 engravings (and I can believe it!) detailing the astounding number of large and small scale machinery and tools used to get farming where it is today. The detail provided regarding developments and the long history of these tools is extensive starting with beasts of burden all the way to the "modern" gas and kerosene tractors.
Bottom line - I have serious doubts whether many full catalogs from 1892 or 1896 (full copies included in the book) exist today and if they did they would certainly cost you a lot more than $20 to acquire. If you sell farm implements I don't see how you could do without this volume in your library. Smaller tool collectors and dealers will benefit as well with the additional detailed catalog pages with illustrations often with their original cost and use.
Even with no interest at all in this field you will find this book,as I did, to be fascinating and extremely well done.

Title: Cherish Me Always, A Century of Dolls (Antique Photographs of Children with Dolls) ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
You may not be aware of this but there exists a whole separate group of collectors who just collect vintage pictures of children with their toys. Combine this group with toy collectors who also like to have these pictures, often grouping them with the toy pictured for extra sellability, and you can imagine how difficult it is to get your hands on these photos.
This book is one in a series of "Cherish.." books featuring antique pictures and focuses on dolls and the children who love them. It features 229 photographs reproduced with startling clarity. Each picture includes the dimensions of the original photo along with a short description that often includes the type of doll, studio, history and more.
A word of caution. If your like me and firmly believe that some of the more bizarre looking dolls do indeed have a life of their own after you turn out the lights, you may want to skip a few pages featuring a few scary characters! For that matter, some of the kids are a little frightening too!
Bottom line - Though this book wont necessarily be the answer for those who want the original picture to add to original dolls for sale, it is at the least a stop gap measure for the picture collectors until they can get there hands on the elusive originals (good luck!). A charming addition to doll lovers libraries too.

Title: Clocks Price Guide, Antique Trader ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
This guide provides as detailed a guide on clocks as I have seen and deals with over 800 clocks from the 17th to the 20th century. Hats off for the inclusion of the later "Collectible" clocks that have gained much popularity along with the Collectibles market in general but until now have had little or no reference material.
A whopping 80% of the clock listings feature a crisp picture and all listings have an impressive amount of detail and history. Descriptions include even the tiniest details, so much so that the pictures are almost overkill! Even for the many months it took for this guide to be put together, I have my doubts whether any one else without the long history, knowledge and connections of the Trader group could have put this guide together with a fraction of the information and clock type coverage in twice the time.
Having said that, with the experience that comes along with the Antique Trader group I do have to call them on the issue of prices. The only mention of prices is that they are derived from "a number of sources". That's great and it certainly appears that great efforts have been taken to pull the book together but without knowing more information it is difficult for the beginner to properly utilize this, or any, guide. Prices realized at auction can be vastly different from the retail market as can be "asking" prices versus actual sales. No price guide is infallible with regards to prices but the basis for determining those prices simply has to be elaborated on in as much detail as possible to give the guide a starting point. I have to believe that this detailed information exists as many prices are clearly actual retail or auction sales as they are often very odd (e.g. $252) values.
Bottom line - This guide certainly provides a nice overview of the vast numbers and types of clocks on the market today and it's the most comprehensive I've seen to date. The detailed descriptions and large numbers of photos make identification easy and provide a lots of detail.
The lack of value background makes the guide much less usable particularly for the beginning collector. Certainly this guide is not useless for the beginner and the detailed history and glossary will still educate as will the huge number of listings.

Title: Retro Chic, a guide to Fabulous Vintage and Designer Resale.. ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
With the dwindling number of Vintage shops and clothing out there you certainly don't want to miss a shop when you happen to be traveling for other reasons. Here's a guide that you can really use.
Throw this book in you bag or glove compartment and you'll always have an easy reference to local Vintage and resale/retro clothing locations. O.K., I have to chastise them from not driving the few miles from Washington, D.C. to check Funk & Junk® out. Guess those Pucci pieces in the back will remain there for another savvy buyer!
The book primarily hits the major cities, though quite a few of them (10 U.S. and 2 Canadian), so I'm expecting a follow-up volume with surrounding metropolitan areas, come on girls, get to it! Though compact , this guide really packs the information in and each City section features a visual key to the types (e.g. men's women's, etc.) of clothing sold in each shop/web site along with a four level price structure to let you know how much cash you may need at each location. Along with these indicators is a brief write up that includes a description of the shops specialties along with the occasional comment from the owners. When applicable web site information is included with the contact information and address at the top of each shop section. The last section is dedicated to Internet sales and its not just a duplication of the shops with Web sites from the city guide so make sure you check it out.
Though the focus initially appears to be mostly on snagging the top level designers, don't overlook the descriptions for each shop which more often than not include the up and coming lesser known stuff that is generally more affordable and climbing in value every day.
As a bonus there is a healthy introduction section that includes a lengthy "what's hot" sections by decade. Each section ends with a listing of the more well known and sought after designers of that decade. The authors know of what they speak in this section; one of them is a Film and T.V. costume designer herself and the other is a syndicated fashion and beauty columnist.
Bottom line - The only thing I regret about this book is that others may get there before me! Seriously, this book is well worth the price and if it leads you to just one bargain it will pay for itself many times over. The layout is straight forward and gives a detailed enough description of what people sell to make your choices of where to go first.

Title: Metalwares price guide, Antique Trader's ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
I was unfamiliar with the first edition of this book and I find the grouping of metal items of all types to be a surprising, but needed format. They do it with glass, why not metal?
The guide covers Silver, Brass, Chrome, Copper, Pewter, Tin and even Aluminum and the categories are are so varied I wont even begin the list. Many of these items are scarcely if at all mentioned in other general guides so having this guide on the shelf will likely come in handy some day, if not immediately. With the inclusion of over 1000 photographs, identifying your mystery items may be solved, as it was for me with 2 items I've had for years.
As with most/all of Antique Trader's guides the descriptions go well beyond the norm of many other guides and along with the pictures of many items provides very exacting details both for size, circa and condition.
It seems to be a bad trend for the Trader guides (and, to be fair, many others) of late to leave out the critical detailed pricing criteria from their price guides and I hope that this is corrected with future offerings to give the readership a better understanding of where the referenced prices came from so they can better interpret the "values" with regards to venue and region of the country they are in. Realizing that it is a burden to individually note region and venue with every item, simply noting ("auction") next to values sold at auction would be a start and a big help to at least breakdown values between retail and auction where values are generally a percentage of retail values.
Bottom line - Antique Trader guides are always jam packed with such a wide variety of items since they are so involved with the Antiques world and having one of their top level guides such as this is rarely a mistake. For a dealer this type of guide almost always come in handy at one time or another whether it's right off the bat (as it was for me in this case) or a year down the road. This is what developing a good library is all about.
Once again the lack of pricing information is disturbing but all too common with many guides and it does not prevent me from recommending this guide.

Title: Googlies, the History and Art of ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Before there were the "Big Eye" kids of the 1970's there were "Googlies". Kind of sounds like a skin irritation to me but don't tell that to the collectors of these unique European dolls.
The origin of these whimsical dolls near the turn of the 20th century is complex and the history behind them is well discussed in the opening pages of the book. Throw together Freud's child development theories plus Palmer Cox's Brownie characters, Kewpie dolls and early "Alice in Wonderland" illustrated wide eyed characters and from them is born the Googly doll.
Following this well written introduction is a detailed discussion of some of the most well known manufacturers throughout Europe. Each section is dedicated either to one of the larger companies of Germany or the smaller companies of France, England and Italy. This book includes well over 300 full color pictures so each section is chock full of great examples of these strangely appealing (and somewhat frightening!) dolls.
Bottom line - If there is ANY missing information about Googly dolls in this book I think anyone would be hard pressed to produce it. Obviously well researched and equally well written. Detailed descriptions, company history, mold marks and full color pictures make for a complete reference to these dolls that I'm certain move when your not looking!

Title: Schuco Classic Tin Toys, the Collector's guide ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Having lived in Germany briefly when I was a child I'm all too familiar with classic Schuco toys. As for throngs of others, they hold a special place in my Pop psyche. I still have all of my original Schuco toys to this day, they're hard to part with.
Though there are prices listed for all of the toys noted in the book, to me it is much more of a lavish cocktail book suited for drooling. Each section delves into the major areas for Schuco; Cars, Motorcycles, Boats and Airplanes along with an "other" toy section.
For the lucky vehicles/toys highlighted your treated to a fairly detailed history of the production of the item along with technical highlights, rarity guide and value. Additional photos include cute dioramas, original packaging and advertising.
The shining highlight of this book are the super high quality color photographs with amazing close-up detail and blazing original colors of the mostly mint examples illustrated.
Bottom line - Schuco toys are, for the most part, hard to come by and this book may be the only time you'll be able to see some of the real rarities. This book fits in just fine next to your high end quality Art coffee table books and I expect more guests will pick up this one first!

Title: Miniature Millinery, the Art of Making ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
What well dressed doll would be seen dead without a hat to match her outfit? Don't let your dolls suffer the embarrassment, make them one!
Don't know how to start?, no worries. This book has a clear introduction that teaches you the basics of hat construction and provides a list of all the materials you might need to make any number of hats using different materials. Don't have those kind of materials on hand? Again, don't panic, the back of the book lists numerous resources to purchase all the supplies you would ever need. The "hat dictionary" at the back is useful not only for doll fans but also makes a useful list for the Vintage Clothing enthusiast with pictures of hats through time.
Illustrated step by step instructions accompany the techniques for making a variety of miniature hats. Five hat pattern pages are included at the back of the book when your ready to tackle your first mini hat.
Bottom line - I have to say that I don't know where people find the time, let alone the patience for making these beautiful miniatures but clearly they're out there. If I tried it I would end up with a flat piece of felt stapled to the dolls head, at best! If I were to summon the courage, this book is a great starting point with a nice overview of techniques, terminology and resources.

Title: Antiques and Collectibles Price Guide, Warman's ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
If you collect or sell Antiques and Collectibles you can't possibly be a jack of all trades and have market knowledge of everything so having a good library is essential. At the center of your library are what I call the "core" books. These core books are either very specific (such as vintage clothing) or very broad overall guides at the top level.
General price guides such as Warman's provide the opportunity not only to get an overview of what categories are popular but also some general market values to base your buying and/or selling on. If they made this guide any bigger you would need help lifting it! With over 50,000 items listed and over 600 pages it makes a great door stop when your not reading it!
Warman's has developed a clean format with a large print layout (which makes it easier for us aging dealers to read!). Each section begins with a history of the collecting field along with any pertinent notes such as reproduction alerts. Descriptions are generally brief and straight to the point providing basic identification clues along with values.
Warman's does one of the best jobs I've seen regarding the discussion of price determination and the use of guides themselves. One of the more interesting, and true, points brought up is with regards to condition of the items included. Warman's states, factually, that the vast majority of Antique/Collectible items on the market were meant to be used and, therefore, are rarely in Mint condition. For this reason, Warman's opts to quote prices for items in very good condition unless noted in the individual items.
Bottom line - Over the last 5 years Warman's guide has greatly improved in my eyes both in terms of layout , broadness of categories and even ideology. When my next review/update of core book comes up I'm fairly certain this guide will post on my must have book list for Antique dealers. Choosing a general Antique/Collectibles guide is, to a certain extent, in the eye of the collector but this guide certainly gets a high recommendation from me. Frankly, you can't have too many of these general guides as it provides a nice overview complete with comparisons for sanity checks on "values".

Title: Hummel Figurines & Plates Identification and Price Guide, Luckey's ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Often referred to as the Hummel Bible, Luckey's is a well established and well put together guide for everything Hummel. By the way, I do mean EVERYTHING Hummel including of course the figurines but also plates, dolls, music boxes, plaques, needlework and many more categories.
New comers to this hugely popular line will benefit by the detailed collector's guide section which provides lengthily details on how to buy, how to sell, spotting fakes and inspection tips. Most importantly, this section goes into great details to discuss the numerous trademarks used by Hummel. These marks are essential to dating pieces and each mark is illustrated for easy reference. Before the meat of the book begins your also introduced to a glossary of terminology and a nice section of caring for, displaying and protecting your collection.
O.K. so the intros take up about 60 pages, get ready for an over 500 page Hummel extravaganza. The layout of this book really can't be improved upon. Each item shows the reference number, history of the piece, price variation notes within the item (for mold/color variations, etc.) and short price ranges for the item broken down, when applicable, by trademark. Last but definitely not least, each item has a decent sized photograph for reference.
Bottom line - guess I gave this one away in the introduction but suffice to say that every serious Hummel collector already has this book on their shelves. If your going to start collecting Hummel you have to buy this guide, there is no other.

Title: Vintage Accessories, Ladies identification and value guide ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
I am so happy to welcome Collector books (a division of Schroeder publishing) to the feature. I say this for two reasons. First because they put out two of my favorite top level guides (Schroeder's Collectible Toys and Schroeder's Antiques) which have both made all of must have lists for Collectors and Dealers with the exception of a Vintage clothing dealer since they don't apply. Secondly because their guides are of very high quality and more often than not are hardback editions. This last point may seem like a minor one to some but when you have hundreds of volumes in your library that you are constantly pulling from the shelves and replacing the softback ones are the first to get damaged. Plus give me glossy heavy stock paper over a lesser uncoated bond paper anytime. Just like my Collectibles and Antiques, I want my library in mint condition!
From their initial offerings I've pulled out this book mostly due to the nearly nonexistent amount of reference material for the Vintage clothing arena. Lots more great titles to follow!
Having a great period dress, blouse or slacks is always nice but what really completes the look are the accessories you pair with them. Whether it's a funky or classic hat, near one-of-a-kind purse or that pair of shoes that just sets everything off, having the right accessories can set your style apart for all others.
Of course I've mentioned just a few accessories and, in fact, this category in Vintage clothing is much broader than some might think. "Ladies Vintage Accessories" will certainly set you straight as it tackles Aprons, Capes, Shawls, Fans, Gloves & Muffs, Hankies and Scarves and Parasols and Umbrellas in addition to the basics I've mentioned.
They need every page of the whooping 336 included to provide you with such a broad overview. True to the style of Collector Books offerings, each section doesn't just plow into the listing of items and their values but, instead, provides you with a detailed history of each category of accessory. Within this introduction as well as throughout the book you are also treated to some seldom seen original advertisements for the items discussed. This material is far from just filler and there is no effect on the healthy number of listings within the categories. Obviously you can't possibly capture every accessory out there on the market but the selection is clearly carefully chosen and provides a very usable guide.
Here again is where this publishers books shine, each and every item comes with a professional full color picture to go along with the text description and retail value. Condition, measurements and dates are always provided along with interesting details and history when available. The items featured are a healthy mix of truly collectible clothing to just plain funky wearable pieces which is a refreshing change from some of the older published Vintage clothing books which, more often than not, feature clothing that most people simply preserve or display. The trend is certainly towards the wearable market and the author recognizes that two distinct groups have emerged.
Bottom line - needless to say I read a lot of price guides and reference material. When there is a book that I take great pains to delve into each and every page without any skimming it's got to be good. I did and it is!
I found the historical perspectives as well as the eclectic mix of items to be well put together to provide a valuable tool to dealer and collector alike. Regardless of the lack of materials on the subject, this book would make my must have/core book list for Vintage clothing dealers. And remember collectors, it always pays to know as much (or more!) than your dealer.

Title: Star Wars Super Collector's Wish Book ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Though in my opinion it seems like a "Long ago in a Galaxy far away" since we've had a good Star Wars episode it hasn't dampened my enthusiasm for Star Wars collectibles. I'm not alone.
I hold in my hand easily the largest reference book produced on the Star Wars merchandise to date. I'm certainly not about to count but I believe this book when it says that it contains over 30,000 collectibles with over 17,000 pictures! Just for laughs I had to see, it weighs over 4 pounds! The table of contents print is about as small as you can get while still being readable and it's a fully packed two pages long. 500 categories are broken out.
Pictures are generally small to make way for the tremendous amount of listings but all are clear and still easy to make out. Listings are concise and include a new/mint value. A guide at the front of the book lets you use this value as a basis for evaluating the various conditions of your items. Needless to say, I have skimmed all of the various sections (believe me, I'm going back in page by page!) but all are laid out in an identical manner so I'm confident in the integrity of all of the categories.
This super collector/author just can't leave well enough alone and his fever for Star Wars becomes apparent with the addition of some helpful text on collecting original autographs for cast members including pitfalls and sensible tips to protect yourself from getting burned and other interesting sections on collectible props and fringe artists creating their own unique Star Wars collectibles.
Bottom line - The easy to use back index combined with the table of contents in the front of this guide make it impossible for you NOT to find a listing for your items of interest. I can say that with almost near certainty and I wouldn't hesitate to say that if it bears the "Star Wars" trademark it's in this guide.
This book is easily three times as large as others I've seen/owned and it takes you right up to the current releases. Having this book as a collector or dealer will pay off both now and in the future.

Title: Teddies (Teddy Bears), How to Make Award Winning ![]()
![]()
Click for larger picture
Steiff, Schuco, Hermann. Just a few of the classic vintage manufacturers or Teddy Bears which are often passed down from generation to generation. That certainly provides deep meaning for family members but think of how much deeper it would be if the Teddy was MADE by your family member?
Sound intriguing? I've got a book for you. "How to make Award Winning Teddies" provides you with everything you need to complete 25 Teddies from the tiniest baby bear to papa bear himself (see book cover picture for some examples). The title indicates award winning since the designs are in fact from South Africa's most prominent Teddy artists.
Each bear starts off with a full color close-up so you know what you should end up with along with a detailed pattern sheet and instructions to complete you heirloom. They make it seem easy. The front section has illustrated techniques along with a picture of all the tools your likely to need for your new hobby. A listing at the back provides you with both European and U.S. contacts for Mohair suppliers if you really want to make a top shelf Teddy.
Bottom line - Many of Hobby House offerings leave me wondering "why don't I have the time to make those cool toys?". Some things never change but if you've got the time, patience and love I can think of no better toy to make. Teddy bears have a rich tradition in the toy market that is likely to continue and I suspect that the after market for Teddy's will easily include some of the examples illustrated in the book which are both nicely detailed and made of quality materials.
